Welcome to Bleeping Computer, a free community where people like yourself come together to discuss and learn how to use their computers. Using the site is easy and fun. As a guest, you can browse and view the various discussions in the forums, but can not create a new topic or reply to an existing one unless you are logged in. Other benefits of registering an account are subscribing to topics and forums, creating a blog, and having no ads shown anywhere on the site. When posting your problem, do not run and post a ComboFix logs. ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. Using it on your own can cause problems with your computer. Any posts containing CF Logs will be ignored.
To receive help, you should instead provide a detailed description of your problem, detailed word-for-word error messages that you are receiving, screenshots of strange behaviour, and your operating system. This information is much more useful to our helpers than a ComboFix log.

QUOTE Also, I received the "Windows Virtual Memory Minimum is Too Low" message again the morning when my Spy Sweeper was running. Resource heavy security programs like Spysweeper will drain your resources and slow down performance. Sometimes you just have to experiment to get the right combo for your particular system as there is no universal solution that works for everyone.

Thank you again.
I thought I had firewall protection with both Norton & Windows. It appears these are not adequate. I searched on this site to find out more information about which firewall programs to use, but either I searched incorrectly or that's not something listed here. Not sure which. I am totally unfamiliar with how to configure a firewall and thought Norton did what needed to be done during installation. Foolish of me I'm sure. Where do I turn for Firewall information? I've been reading a lot of posts about the HijackThis program. Is this something you would recommend I install and run? I ask because I also read that it can be a dangerous program for someone who isn't familiar with how to use it correctly and that would be me. isabellarose This post has been edited by isabellarose: Jul 3 2008, 03:12 PM |

• Understanding and Using Firewalls
• What is a Firewall • How Firewalls Work The Windows XP firewall protects against port scanning but has limitations and it is no replacement for a robust 3rd-party two-way personal firewall.
Before installing a 3rd-party firewall, make sure you turn off the the Windows firewall. For instructions with screenshots, see How to turn off the Windows Firewall in SP2 or How to turn on or off the Windows Vista Firewall. Using two software firewalls on a single computer could cause issues with connectivity to the Internet or other unexpected behavior. Further, running multiple software firewalls can cause conflicts that are hard to identify and troubleshoot. Only one of the firewalls can receive the packets over the network and process them. Sometimes you may even have a conflict that causes neither firewall to protect your connection. However, you can use a hardware firewall (your router) and a software firewall (Kerio or ZoneAlarm) in conjunction. For more information see "The Differences and Features of Hardware & Software Firewalls", "Choosing a Firewall: Hardware v. Software" and "Comparing Firewall Features". "Your System is running low on virtual memory" error message How can I fix "too little virtual memory" in Windows? Virtual Memory in Windows XP Guide What is "virtual memory? How Virtual Memory Works QUOTE I've been reading a lot of posts about the HijackThis program. Is this something you would recommend I install and run? HijackThis is an advanced enumerator (similar in some respects to a registry editor) that is used to display certain areas of the Windows registry where the majority of malware reside. HijackThis will scan these areas of your system and then create a log to help diagnose the presence of undetected malware in known hiding places. Most of the log entries are required to run a computer and removing essential ones can potentially cause serious damage such as loss of Internet connectivity or problems with your operating system which could preventing it from starting. Using HijackThis requires advanced knowledge about the Windows Operating System and relies on trained experts to interpret the log entries in order to determine what needs to be fixed.
