Hello everyone, this is my first post. I actually came here before and was able to find out how to get rid of a Vundo virus on my computer, so thanks for that. Anyways, I looked through previous posts a little bit and couldn't find enough information to really help me out. I have a WD MyBook Essentials (500gb) that recently stopped working. It shows up in it's slot on the computer (inconsistently) but isn't shown as an external harddrive and when I open it it's just blank. Additionally, it says that it's got no free space and no used space. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me remedy this problem; I'd like to use my harddrive again. My computer is a Dell 8400, by the way.

There is a yellow exclamation point beside "USB Mass Storage Device", I believe the one that corresponds to my MyBook.

Does this Mybook...reflect accurately when attached to another system?

The problem could be the device, it could be the USB ports/controllers on your system. It seems prudent to eliminate one from contention by trying the Mybook on another system, as an external USB device.

I plugged it into my friends laptop and it didn't register at all. I'm pretty sure the problem is with the mybook. What can I do now?

I'd be surprised if it were the cable. My computer recognizes that new hardware has been attached but it says they're has been an error, or something of that nature. Any other ideas? Is there any way I can recover data off of it myself?

You said there was an exclamation point by the root hub. Try removing that in Device Manager and reboot. Windows should redetect it and install fresh
