I am asked for a log-in when booting in safe mode, so that throws me into a loop also. I have read that this is a common problem with XP and that there is an easy fix. The problem is all of the fixes I read about require booting from the XP CD, which I do not have. The computers were purchased from a buisness with everything already loaded, and no CDs are available. Is there a way to cure it without the XP CD?? I have other non-infected computers all with CD Burn drives. Thanks, |

Your registry has been altered by malware. go to http://www.mininova.org/tor/1195451 download The Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows V3.12. Home page http://www.ubcd4win.com/ It will download as an iso file Burn this file to a CD,then boot to this CD.Run Registry Repair Wizard,and restore your registry to an earlier date..........Problem Solved.

The link for the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows is a Torrent download - if you don't have a Torrent client, I'd suggest visiting the 2nd link for regular downloads. Regardless of which you choose to download, be sure to scan it with an antivirus program before attempting to open it.
Secondly, I would advise against using registry repair tools. Here's an excellent thread about the myths surrounding registry cleaners: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=61015 And, FWIW, I've found that repeated use of registry cleaners/fixers can corrupt your system as bad as (if not worse) than malware. Finally, Windows has built in tools for this purpose - so I can't see the benefit of the download. Usama You dont seem to understand the mans dilemma, hes in a log on loop,which means he is effectively locked out of his pc. No safe mode, no system restore. The only solution left open to him is a Boot Recovery CD.The UBCD has an extensive array of tools, especially compiled for a wide variety of problems.See link http://www.ubcd4win.com/contents.htm

Well...if the problem is summarized accurately in the link supplied by the OP...then he can use the Recovery Console to effect a recovery of his system to normal status.

I'm quite familiar with the tools mentioned, having used them numerous times. I'm also familiar with the issues described, working with them quite frequently at my job.
As for not understanding - maybe this will clarify things for you....250gibson has computers with no XP CD available. 250gibson needs a copy of the Recovery Console in order to do the fixes that he's already researched. I provided a link to a download of the Recovery Console. I also commented on the advice rendered by doddsdoddsy and cited my disagreements with it. Your blanket statement that "The only solution left open to him is a Boot Recovery CD." is correct. And the first link that I provided will give him a copy of the Recovery Console to use on his computer (which, BTW, I've also used frequently). Then, following the directions in my third link may enable him to recover the registry. Also, if you'll refer to 250gibson's link in Post #4, you'll see that the Recovery Console is needed for that fix. Finally, if you'll refer to my 2nd link, you'll see some of the reasons why we do not recommend the use of registry cleaners/repair tools here at Bleeping Computer. Also, having used registry cleaners for many years (and having seen the results on many other computers) I can state, without doubt, that the repeated use of registry cleaners/fixers will eventually damage your registry to the point where your system won't work properly. -------------------- - John

Ok,
I was able to download the recovery console from the link above and I followed the directions outlined in the fix I found ie: 1. At C: typed CD SYSTEM 32 2. Then typed COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE 3. EXIT to quit recovery console and restart windows After doing this it says I should be able to log in normally because I created the wsaupdater.exe file (now a copy of userinit.exe) Then it tells me to change the USERINIT value in the registry, but I cannot, because after doing the above, I still have the log on log off loop. What did I do wrong?? |

I haven't reviewed your link in detail, but it seems to me that all the action does is that it copies the userinit.exe file and renames the copy to WSAUPDATER.EXE
I suspect that there's a more severe/different problem than is written in that article. While there's many different ways to accomplish this, I'd suspect that you're looking at a repair install of Windows at a minimum - and that will require an XP CD or a copy of the recovery disks from the system manufacturer. -------------------- - John
