BleepingComputer.com: Do I load all 75 critical updates

A friend just did a clean install on Win98SE. She has dial up service. Since I have cable, I told her that I would go to Microsoft catalog and download everything for her on a CD.
When I went to the catalog, there's 75 critical updates WOW.
I have 2 questions:
1. Do I need to download all 75?
2. I'm going to install IE 6 for her, do I first load all critical updates for IE5.5,
then IE6
Please don't tell me that I have to read each one to see which is applicable
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as question 1:
All "critical" updates should be installed, before connecting to the internet.

Not sure about #2.
Wait for someone else to respond.

It would be easier for you to buy a network card if there isn't one on her computer and borrow her computer long enough to update it. $12 - $20.

Next time I have to install 98, I'll make a list.

I did bring her computer to my home, got a AirLink101 Fast Ethernet Adapter, installed it, powered up, inserted the floppy that came with the card, and the instructions say "if this is your first time to install the adapter and have not installed the protocols and clients for Microsoft and Netware, please do not restart the computer. Go to the Start\Settings\Control and double-click the Network icon to install the other necessary files for the network operation"

What protocals and clients for Microsoft and Netware Am I suppose to choose????
Well, I must have installed something I shouldn't have, there were many selections. I then rebooted and a complete freeze, nothing would load.
So, after another clean install, that's where I am. I know just enough to be very dangerous, but it's so much fun

If you can copy your "history" from Microsoft and paste it here, I would greatly appreciate it. I know not to install 891711 till Microsoft fixes it, but the rest are a go.

Having done the same with win98SE just last week I'm familiar with the windows update situation. As mentioned, just the critical updates are needed.

see the post further down the thread for those (approx.)

(25) Security Updates.

They take priority, and will be installed first.
You might have a driver update or two, and I'd consider d/l those.

(2) Driver Updates (depends on your PC)

At that point in the process you'll probably see 48 more windows 98 & 98SE updates.
I still see 35 there when I visit.
I left all the (34) language packs.
I don't need the

01. .NET Framework 1.1,
because I don't use any applications that need it.

Once you start on those "non-critical" updates you'll see these:

02. Euro Conversion Tool (I use it)
03. Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache (yes)
04. Root Certificates Update (doesn't hurt)
05. Mapped Drive Shutdown Update (yes)
06. AOL ART Image Format Support (might visit one of those web sites)
07. Outlook Express (unless you have another like Thunderbird, you may need it)
08. Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express SP1 (needed if you did the above)
09. Agent 2.0 ( I figured why not?)
10. Windows 98 Games (yes)
11. Windows Address Book (yes)
12. Windows Media Player 9 (yes)
13. Security Update for Media Player 9 (yes)
14. GDI Detection

Here's another idea:

Hook her computer up to the phone line, go to Windows Updates, install the new update engine if necessary. Then, go back to Windows Updates and make a list of what it finds. Then download those and burn them to disk.

I'm surprised that the card wanted you to do all that stuff - I've been using Network brand cards and their software installs everything.

I didn't have to do anything to get on the internet with it. Windows set it up during the install. But here's a list of what's in the networking folder:

And the protocols are:

Dial-Up Adapter
NE2000 Compatible
TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP->NE2000 Compatible


The TCP/IP has to be bound to the device - in this case, there is also a LT Winmodem, which is the dialup adapter.

I have not set up any networking or file sharing on that machine - it just has the internet connection.

Check to see what protocols you already have. These (or their counterparts) should be all you need, although the Network card's software sometimes adds more things. Your software may add stuff besides what you see here. Check your device manager to see if it's already loaded a driver for the card. (Windows key + Pause/Break key, then Devices tab.)

Thanks to both of you for responding. I'm going to try that ethernet adapter again tonight. This time I'm going to call the 800 number.If I screw things up, I'll just clean install again. I can't hook her system up to my phone line, I have Comcast Cable
I will make a list of all the criticals for Win98. I do have my list for WinMe if anyone needs them.
I'm a little slow, you'r suggesting to take her computer to her home, get on line, print out all the criticals needed, load them on my system with CD. Great idea!!!!

This if for Windows ME. These are the ones I loaded from Windows update after a Clean install Last May. Please don't think that I am suggesting that anyone load any of these. Please do them at your own risk. They run fine on my Windows Me. I have not loaded the recent two. To double check if everyone loads correctly, you can check them out in C drive-windows-Windows Update Note Pad on your system. I am very careful, I go to Windows Update, check for updates, close everything running except explore and systray, load the olders first, one at a time, reboot my system and go to the next one. I know your laughing at me, and this method is very time consuming, but ever critical/security update loads for me. I started with the olders to the latest:

I did it! I did it!! I did it!!! I got brave, put the ethernet card into the slot, booted up, got Hardware Wizzard, followed all instruction (without me changing anything), checked network componets to verify that it was the same as on my WinMe(& it was), checked device manager(no problem),then powered off. I then removed the power from my cable modem, plugged the ethernet cable from modem to Win98 computer, powered the modem up, wait 5 minuets for the modem to totally get into sequence, boot up computer, and presto, I'm on the internet downloading all critical updates.

phawgg, I do have a few different one's than you. I'll list the ones that we don't have identical in my next reply. So far I've done only critical.
