First off, my system (which i setup dual boot) before was:
C = XP
D = Vista
E = storage
F = storage
So yesterday i got myself into a mess with my system.. and i couldn't get Vista to boot (i think the Master Boot Record was pointing somewhere else).
Tried using Ranish Partition Manager, but when i pointed it to the partition that vista's installed in, it gave me a "NTLDR was not found, press ctrl+alt+del to restart".
Finally Now, i've managed to repair the Vista startup boot (i think), by using the DVD, going into command prompt, and using bootsec.exe to repair the boot sector.
However now, vista starts, and the welcome screen is ok (ie. it shows my account, password i type in it accepts), but after i login, it goes "preparing your desktop" (or something similar, sort of like when i first login). Then it says "Your profile was not loaded correctly. A temporary profile has been made". Looks like a corrupt vista install?
I look into my computer, and see that the drive letters are:
C for Vista
D for XP
I think my Vista's not working because the drive letter for vista is supposed to be D, while XP is supposed to be C.
So i think i have to change my drive letters back to other way around? (ie. C--> D, D-->C).
When i try to do that in Vista, it says it can't do that (change the drive letter C to D) b/c it's a system partition.
I can't boot into XP either, because
1) The Dual-boot screen isn't showing up
and 2) My XP has been acting weird lately, i tried to repair the install, now it says (on boot up): Cannot complete setup in safe mode. please restart" even though I am in normal mode (but i'll try to fix that later) (and no XP didn't cause this problem).
In the Vista repair DVD it shows C as Vista and D as Xp as well. And when i click "repair vista installations" it gives me Vista is on Drive C.
So can someone please help me fix my computer? I think i have to change the drive letters back first (to what it was before), but i don't know how to with one crippled OS which locks the drive letter i need to change.
And of course any addition / other solutions too.
Thanks very much.
