My Dell Inspiron 1525 shut down due to a low battery, and will no longer restart, after being plugged in. It will start to boot, but only get as far as the green bar going across the screen, and stay there forever. I have tried to start from last known good configuration, do a system restore, get into safe mode, etc. All with no success. Any further suggestions? this is for a student who will lose 2 weeks worth of work if I have to reformat!

Try the Vista Startup Repair with your Vista installation DVD: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/repair-windows-with-windows-startup-repair/
It should repair the startup sequence of your Vista installation and will leave your data and files intact.
