i just got the acer 6920 with Core 2 Duo T5550 1.83Ghz, 3GB mem, 320gb hdd, vista premium. But I am trying to shrink the volume which is currently 298.09 GB. I also want to dual boot xp pro. I would like to get it down to 50GB and create another 40GB for XP and the rest for data storage. It will only allow me to shrink to 172GB allowing 126.09 GB. any help is appreciated

Joe

Another person was helped recently by defragging their hard drive. It could be that there's some data in the area that's preventing the amount of shrink that you'd like.

I'm really just guessing here - but how about shrinking it to 172, rebooting, doing a defrag again, rebooting again, and trying to shrink it some more? Also, I'd suggest a larger partition for Vista - mine is currently occupying 55 gB of space - and that's with my documents and data stored on another drive.

Have you tried a 3rd party partitioning tool? There are several free, 3rd party partitioning tools listed here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic3616.html But, I have no experience with them, preferring to use Acronis Disk Director (about $50 US).

I google partition manager find some freeware bellow:

paragon http://www.paragon-software.com
I have not used,no comment!

easeus partition manager
I download from brother soft
http://www.brothersoft.com/easeus-partitio...ager-51814.html

It worked OK, but failed when i tried to merge partition. so i have to allocated the free space to another partition. Partition magic may merge two partitions which will cost you $69.95
