DSTM: I am afraid I have already fallen into the deep end of no return. My family has dug out the strait jack and calling the dog catcher on me! Are you getting any error message, and if so,what is it?

My ISP doesn't permit IRC. I've read there's a way to connect to the chatroom using Java. Is there a way to allow Java for just the chat room but disallow it everywhere else? I don't like to simply leave Java enabled.
Using Firefox 1.5.0.10 Haven't upgraded to 2 yet. Kerio personal firewall paid version with blocking for scripts, ads, java etc. Windows XP Home SP2 Dial-up internet connection 256 MB RAM Orange Blossom

You will need to enable javascript (not java - different animal) in your browser for the chat to work. I don't think any browser allows javascript to be enabled for only one site.

Using the NoScript plug in for Firefox, javascript is disallowed by default for all websites. One can then allow Javascript only for those sites that they wish.
Orange Blossom, who is your ISP? I'm curious as to why they would block IRC? I realize that there can be some problems associated with it, but blocking it outright seems a bit over the top. -------------------- |

Hiii, i'm quite new to this like some of the other message writers...its strange, i talk talk talk (write write write) ha ha, i've done such a-lot of posts but when faced with the thought of going into the chat room, i think to myself "what am i gona say"..."they're probably all sick of the nn23 name clogging all the topics"
 I cant help it, I LOVE IT!!!! anyways, as always i get over that and i'm then thinking "ok i'll just go in and see what they're chatting about and see if i've got anything to add or enquire" so i followed a couple of links, on the first page (the 2nd mess with the links in) and i've come away feeling REALLY confused! its probably the same old quiery for you lot, the IRC thing, did some of the reading about it and that was a bit confusing too although i learnt some stuff as always about things completely unrelated he he it is possible that i do have javascript for i am with both msn and yahoo so my comp MUST be usin something? oh well he he, back to see if anyones helped/updated their help for me in the forums BYE

Orange Blossom, unless you explicitly prohibited Java, it should already be running, so I am a little confused. Anyway, my interpretation of the use policy is a bit different. Actually, it makes no sense as some of it is ambiguous. Are you on a shared, dedicated, or co-location server? The way I read that is if you host web pages running on one of their servers, then you are prohibited from running IRC on it because it can be a means for their shared, dedicated, or co-location servers to be infected. I don't see anything in their that prohibits you from using an IRC client on your own system. I think if you checked with them, they would say the same thing. A shared server is one where you share a server with other web content providers, accordingly, a dedicated server is one where you are the sole client providing web content. And a co-located server is where you have your system (a server which you own) physically located at one of their sites.

Thanks for the explanations of what those different terms are: a lot of computereze is still like Etruscan to me. My computer does not act as a server in any way, nor do I host web-content. So is my conclusion correct that I'm not on a dedicated, shared, or co-location server account? If that is the case, then I think I could use the IRC means of connecting to the chatroom once I figure it out. Hmm. Are there specific services that need to be enabled in order for IRC to work?
----- Re Java: Yes, I have deliberately disabled Java in my browser. I find that I almost never need it. When I do I enable it for that specific site, and I don't have anything else open, but I cannot see myself having only the chatroom open. I generally use Firefox by the way. Even if your computer was a server, I see nothing in those two particular rules that would prohibit you from running an IRC server on your system as long as it was not co-located on their backbone, which it is not. So I think you are home free.
