BleepingComputer.com: Dvd Drive Works/not Works

This is very strange, Sometimes when I boot up my computer my DVD Rom Drive works fine, And then the other times, it boots up and the DVD Rom Drive isn't even listed, I can't open or close it, I've tried 2 different Drives and they both seem to be doing this, Would it be a fault power cable? Maybe some drivers? I have no idea.

Possible bad DATA cable going to the drive or a loose connection at the motherboard

Hmm, I'll have to look to see if I have a spare, Thanks for the help

You might also check the jumper settings on DVD drive.

Making the setting reflect Cable Select...is a good way of never going wrong, no matter which connector is used .

Try deleting the Upper and Lower Filters.

Use the following instructions to back up the registry.

Backing up the registry

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT

• Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
  http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  
• For version with the Installer:
  Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  
• For the zipped version:
  Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.

Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe


Deleting Upper and Lower Filters in Registry

Step 1: Start Registry Editor
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor starts.

Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
5. In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters.

Note An UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak.

6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the UpperFilters registry entry:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The UpperFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.

Note Do not exit Registry Editor. You must have this program for the next step.

Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry
1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
5. In the right pane (topic area), click LowerFilters.

Note An LowerFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the LowerFilters registry entry, you must click LowerFilters and not LowerFilters.bak.

6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the LowerFilters registry entry:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The LowerFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.
8. Exit Registry Editor.

Step 4: Restart the computer

If a CD recording program no longer works after you restart the computer, you must reinstall the CD recording program.

Tried it, No difference, Although I only noticed today that my boot.ini has dissappeared

I was about to do that, Until I forgot my CD drive doesn't work :/

Just to let you know, The CD ROM shows up in the BIOS, But I can't even control it, I don't think it even turns on

It said that it works without the IDE and I tested and my Drive will only power up with only the IDE disconnected and molex connected, If i plug my IDE back in it won't work, I have a 700W PSU, That shouldn't be the problem?

Are you sure that you have the data cable connected properly. As you look at the rear of the drive there should be a red stripe going down the right side of the cable.

I have tried 2 different data cables with it, But the red stripe goes down the left hand side, There isn't another way it can go in though since it has that little catch at the top
