We have a microscope here that has an attached video camera. The camera has both NTSC and USB outputs.

The software package than came with the microscope is "Motic Images Plus 2.0". The USB driver it installs is for an "AD640". Motic has got to be the worst piece of software I have every had to try to use.

Is there any other software that will do the same thing - interface via USB and display/capture images from the video camera? Freeware preferable, but willing to look at anything.

I do not know of any, but your microscope sounds very cool. You can play around with some of these:

You could try NO drivers...........My digital camera came with bad software too so i uninstalled it, now i just let Windows XP do the work. XP has hundreds of drivers and is able to find one similar for the hardware your using.

Give it a try,

Chief.

P.S. sorry if your not using XP but i'm sure some other OS's have drivers that may work.
