also if i get a pci and that doesnt fix the problem what else is there to try a new cpu?

Standoffs
Usually brass but can be steel or even plastic
If you remove the motherboard, you'll notice that it does not sit directly on the mounting plate
Standoffs are approx. 1/4" long and hold the board up off of the metal plate so nothing on the bottom grounds out. Sometimes the solder traces can be sloppy and touch something that they should not

hmm im gona have to check this out, im pretty sure that i put everything back correctly. going to go c now. if i can not fix this though is there a way for me to get my documents off of the hard drive?

2 ways. you can remove it from your computer, changer the jumper to slave and put in you husband's computer and copy the documents off of it, or you can get an external USB enclosure and mount the drive in that and plug it into any computer with a USB connection. How old is the computer? You'll need to know the type of connection. Either IDE or SATA

On the back of any IDE device (hard drive or CD+DVD drive) you'll see a 2 rows of 4/5 pins :::: Depending if you want the drive to be master, slave, or cable select will determine where you place the 2pin plastic jumper. There's usually a diagram on the device. You then plug it into the corresponding connector of the flat ribbon cable. The end plug being master and the middle being slave.

First, I'm assuming this is IDE. An IDE connection is approx. 2 inches wide and the cable is a flat ribbon
You must take the drive that is the master and attach it to the end of the ribbon. The drive that is the slave goes on the midle connector

This article has good pictures, this is on exchanging a new hard drive for your old hard drive. But it should help explain how to use the jumper settings. Your hard drive would be the slave and your husbands the Master.
