No Sound If Muted On Last Shut Down

Running vista on a dell xps laptop. if i have the sound muted and i shut down. when i restart and unmute the sound it does not work. i have to leave it unmuted and restart the laptop again for it work. any idea what might cause this.

Any errors in Event Viewer? Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Under the Windows logs will be categories for Application and System. Please look for errors/warnings at the time you mute the sound and at the time that you reboot.

As a first attempt, I'd try uninstalling your sound card drivers and reinstalling a freshly downloaded copy from the Dell Support website.
