2 IDE drives on the single IDE channel. is it possible?

im planning to have on a single ide channel 1 IDE HARDDRIVE + CDROM
is it ok will it not dstroy the system?

Are you building a computer and it only has one IDE socket? Doesn't it also have SATA that you can use, or are you building with existing hardware that you have? You can set the hard drive to master and the ROM drive to slave. This can cause some problems, though. You might consider an IDE controller PCI card Example

i alredi have 1 ide HD and 1 cdrom and im planning to make the cdrom slave and the other a master. is it posible?
my mobo has SATA but i dont like to buy one SATA HD coz it will cost me i want to use my old HD and my old CDROM as wll

Hi, your motherboard should have two IDE connectors. They are probably labeled 0 and 1. If you want to run two cd drives or a dvd and a cd keep them together on the second IDE connector. Don't forget to check the jumper setting on each drive. I usually use CS which is short for Cable Select. In other words which ever connector on the ribbon cable the drive is connected to will determine whether it is master or slave, the end connector being for the master and the middle for the slave. Oh yeah, keep hard drives together too, on the motherboard connector labeled 0.

Well...IME..not every motherboard has two IDE connectors. I have two motherboards sitting here in my apartment that are this way.

From what I've seen, more recent boards only have 1 IDE motherboard connector, while having at least 2 SATA connectors.

As one who still uses IDE drives...I suggest that you just buy/use SATA hard drives (because that's what motherboards dictate) and use the IDE connector for optical drives (CD/DVD).

Having two optical drives on one cable/one motherboard connector is not a problem. The problems begin when you try to run an optical drive and a hard drive on the same IDE cable.

If you tell us either the motherboard manufacturer and model...or the system manufacturer and model...we can eliminate guesswork and generalities.

One thing to always remember...you can retain use of your PATA/IDE devices very easily, no matter what the motherboard specs are...by just using a PATA/IDE controller card in one of your PCI slots.

Yes Louis, I agree. It's quite common for newer motherboards that support SATA to only have 1 IDE port and if you need to connect more drives a controller card is the way to go.

but is it safe considering that i only have 1 ide connector and i wnt to use my 1 ide HD as master and my old cdrom as slave on one ide connector channel?
