 Yes it is, when I was in High School my buddy had one made of wood. Over at his house we would sometimes mess with it when we were bored. We called it the "Do Nothing" because that's what is does, nothing.... I haven't seen one since then...:flowers:

So, in real life you would turn the protruding part anti-clockwise to keep the thing moving?

Actually, a three cog unit is possible to make also. One just has to carefully plot the angles and the cogs must slide on the rod also.

//Edit: The unit as shown will operate in either direction. Clockwise or counter clockwise.

*KoanYorel giggles as I saw your first posting before you edited it DSTM.

More than 30 years ago I was taking a mechanical drawing/drafting class.
There was a working model there similar. Except it used wooden balls running in a grooved track.
We were told its designer was trying to build a fluid pump. I don't know if that was truth or fiction.

Our instructor asked us to draw up plans for 3 cog or 4 cog units.
No working models were ever built and we determined that 4 cog units were not possible operating in the same plane.
Only one student solved the 3 cog draft requiring six tracks with an articulated driving arm using balls of course, not the other.
I wish I knew where the guy was now, as I'd have him send you his drawing.
The only easy day was yesterday.

 where is the energy coming from to create this motion? and where's it going to? is the output worth the input?
just a thought :flowers:

I think one has to turn the protruding part in either direction to create the motion. The movement in the picture is probably there just to show how the parts would slide...

As for where the energy is going and whether the output is greater than the input, I think we'll need a physicist!

Here is an interesting Site about unworkable Devices. Why don't they work?

Nice linking.

Note "our" simple device is not listed. But some others might actually work also.
