On the pole is a likely place for the problem to be. (Squirrels love to chew on cable insulation - particularly if they are extra hungry.) You have low signal strength, and that can be anywhere between the modem RF connector ("F" connector) all the way back to the main distribution source.

Give them a chance to finish their troubleshooting. If it takes too long, call them back to be sure they haven't forgotten about you.

You can also request a partial refund for the time the connection was working poorly/not at all.

Technical comment: DOCSIS is the "Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification". One of those specifications is that the modem will operate properly over an input signal range of -15 to + 15 dBmV. If your signal level is -13.6, you are within the specs, but just barely and any noise or other interfernce on the line will cause errors and a drop in transfer rate.

Ok so thats what the DOCSIS is, but how come they said its "not normal" for it to be outside the range of -7 and 7?

Sounds like a limit the ISP sets on itself. If they can keep it within +/- 7 under normal conditions, it is not likely to go outside the +/- 15 limits even under worse case conditions.

Kinda like driving down a 30 foot wide road. You CAN weave +/- 15 feet and stay on the road, but you are driving much better and are less likely to leave the road because of a wind gust if you only weave +/- 7 feet.

Make sense?

Hey All,

Pretty much your road runner advertises upto 5 mbps....key word UP TO within acceptable tolerances is between 2 & 5 so if you are finding that you arent reaching those tolerances contact them. But if you want to save some time on the phone get a tracert of a website like www.google.com and have the Times in the first 10 hops, and IP addresses to go with them.

With those they will be able to schedule a tech to come out to the house and check everything out. If they didnt even look at the modem that is possible cause it is an expensive piece of equipment that is costly to replace. Checking things at the pole is quite feasible, considering it could be the tap at the pole, moisture in the lines ect.

THere are tones of things that could cause it, I mean I dont know where you surf or anything, and Im not taking you for an idiot, so please dont get offended but how often do you scan with your spyware tools?

Also Speed test sites are unreliable, they are browser/resource dependant, a tracert is definitely the way to go.
