I have a Compaq tower that I had upgraded a while ago with a DVD-/+ RW DL drive and everything was working fine in it, then one day last week it just stopped recognizing DVD discs at all even prerecorded that it had run just the day before. I have checked the properties for it and could not find anything wrong, I also checked all connections and even deleted the secondary controller and let windows reinstall it and there has been no change. I have an additional drive hooked to the same IDE controllerand it works fine, they have been together on the same cable for a long time.

Again any help would be appreciated.

Some things you can try:
  • If you recently installed some burning software, uninstall it.
  • Use the fix given on this Microsoft page.
  • Clean the laser using one of those drive cleaning kits.
  • Open the Device Manager (Start > Run > type "devmgmt.msc"). Locate the CD/DVD drive, right click on it and select "Uninstall". After it has uninstalled reboot the computer (it will be automatically reinstalled).
