I'm a little confused, my mother's avg keeps wanting her to pay for it but mine is still free and working/updating just fine?

(Are there any alternatives to avg free that are as good?)

Although this isn't the perfect topic, I would recommend Avira or Avast. Just search them up on Download.com.

For those interested, I have located this link

http://www.avg.com/faq.num-1593#faq_1593

but note

QUOTE
Full support for all paid AVG 7.5 products will be provided until April 30, 2009.

I guess this does not include the free AVG antivirus 7.5 which many of us are still running?

OUR 'fate' may well be evidenced in the next few days if the program will or will not update whistling.gif

Hi, I am sorry I didn't see your request for a link until just now and when I did, I continued to read the replies before getting it and saw that you found the link for me. I am also sorry that my post was incorrect, until I read what you posted above, I did not notice the word "paid". I guess I did not notice that word because I thought avg was just free, no paid versions. I am terribly sorry I gave bad info about this.

I have a new (to me anyway) computer I am setting up. There are so many antivirus and spyware removal programs, many free and others not. Assessments of their effectiveness also seem to change over time. I would appreciate advice regarding which ones are best to use today. I prefer free of course.

centerforcc,
Please keep all of these questions in your other topic, Advice For Antivirus and Spyware Removal Programs.
This topic is for the discussion of the fate, of AVG 7.5.

AVG 7.5 antivirus FREE version ..currently still updating..but for how long
( those who may be following this thread may wonder why the concern about the updates?

Unfortunately those of us who have a 98se computer are hopefully aware that the new AVG8.0 Antivirus suite is NOT compatible with Windows 98se computers which many of us still choose to run )

Present stats for AVG7.5 antivirus are
7.5.557

270.11.7/1983

I also note ON the AVG forum

AVG update info

and the info here which has not yet changed

If it's discontinued on April 31st, that gives current paying users 8 weeks.
That's just really great.

Welcome AVG 8.5, now replacing AVG 8.0.

Just thought you guys should know in case you were not looking over your shoulders.

And I would imagine my paid subscription through April 2010 for Version 7.5 (on my W2K machine) will transfer. If not rest assured I'll ring a warning bell here.

I actually doubt it, because they're ending the support. It doesn't mean they're ending the program, but without the support, 7.5 will be useless.

What I meant to convey was that the subscription will transfer to whatever protection AVG replace 7.5 with. Or they will send a pro-rata refund if it is not operational. I do not imagine I can ask for a dedicated team of AVG engineers to work for another year just for me. Important as I feel I am I just cannot bring myself to ask this!

But I shall say I am at this minute investigating the matter and looking at the options. Trouble is my license number appears not to be accepted as "valid" and there is no facility for cut and paste out of the AVG control panel. Borrocks I say.

Cheers and so forth.

It would be very useful to know from where you got that bit of news as I cannot yet locate it on the AVG forum thumbup2.gif

on THAT info does that mean the program will continue updating and protecting a computer but the 'background 'support that maybe we do not use anyways will NOT be available ??

Is anyone else updating to 8.5 from 7.5 due to the cut off of updates?

Unfortunately , as many of us have discovered, AVG 8.5 is not compatible with many of the older OS's which many of us choose to still run

This is why this thread is discussing, for the benefit of users OF AVG antivirus program 7.5 , the current updates to the AVG antivirus 7.5 version thumbup2.gif

For those 'interested parties' AVG antivirus 7.5 is still updating .... thumbup2.gif

Just to let all the AVG 7.5 Free users know that I have received notice regarding AVG which states the following:
"Support for AVG 7.5 is about to be withdrawn. After April 12 AVG Free 7.5 will no longer be updated. To stay protected you must download 8.5"
