I just purchased on a renewal basis a 5-user 2 year licence network for AVG anti-virus only as an extension for my 7.5 which was running on all my home machines. One machine is running W2K and the rest are all XP Pro..

The XP Pro machines were all issued with AVG 8.0 without me being offered the chance of keeping 7.5. However, the W2K machine allowed the licence change on ver 7.5; presumably because the 8.0 version was not suitable for W2K. Whatever the rationale I have 7.5 operating on a licence which runs through 2010.

Obviously this is a contractual obligation by Grisoft but I am not actually expecting this situation to run to 2010. The free version is obviously much more vulnerable to unilateral changes from the manufacturer than the paid version. But it may be relevant to note that as of June 2 Grisoft do have a contract to keep 7.5 operational through May 2010. Believe what you may.

And the installation of 8.0 does uninstall 7.5 no problem in the course of the install. There is an exception noted on the website which I don't recall right now but should be read by anyone upgrading from 7.5 to 8.0.

BTW: Grisoft and Lavasoft are not the same organisation. Are they?

I offer the following, for whatever it's worth...

I run AVG 7.5 Free Edition. I'm well aware of the descrepancy between the pop-up that (until today) reflected May 31st as the cutoff for updates and the Dec. 31st cutoff date reflected on AVG's forums.

After downloading this morning's updates, I got a new pop-up reflecting June 25th as the cutoff for 7.5 updates. The AVG forums still show Dec. 31st.

I have no idea why AVG is doing this. I've used AVG Anti-Virus for years and I've been quite happy with it, but I'm not happy with this kind of duplicitousness -- particularly since the pop-up screen has to have been deliberately changed. If the cutoff is still Dec. 31st, why not change the pop-up to Dec. 31st? If it's been moved up to June 25th, why does AVG not say so in their forums?

This does not sit well with me at all. Whatever AVG is up to, I'd rather not be part of it. I'll probably be giving Avast or maybe Avira Antivir a try...

the final decision is 31 december.. but I've read somewhere(on the official avg forum) from an avg employee that they will try to make users upgrade to 8.0 asap..

making the pop ups say "31 june" is one of the ways to make you update to 8.0 I guess..

I just want to add my 2 cents to this topic.
I too have had the AVG popup that refers to the cutoff date as being 5/25/08 and the new popup referring to 6/25/08. Today is 6/26/08 and just out of curiosity I did a check for AVG updates just a few minutes before posting this reply and there was an update available. To me that doesn't make any sense, if the cutoff date was 6/25/08, then why was there an update available the day after the cutoff? I did a check for updates on 6/25/08 also and there wasn't one available, so the update that I received today must have just been released today.
I like AVG so I will be updating it to version 8.0, but I've decided that I am going to wait until I can no longer receive updates for the 7.5 version. Might be a good idea for anyone that may be leary of updating to 8.0 to do the same.
Oh, just a side note, if you don't want the yahoo toolbar that is offered in the 8.0 version, then untick the box! thumbup.gif

There is no reason you shouldn't - it now includes AVG's Anti-Spyware application embedded aswell (This use to be a subscription program!).

Also, the SpywareBlaster issue should be fixed soon - it already is for the pay version.

One reason would be that many people are still having issues with the new AVG 8.0. Sounds like enough reason to wait until 7.5 is totally *dead* before deciding to update (or switch). Yesterday they had a new program update to 7.5 (maybe to change the date listed for the updates to end?), which I chose not to update at that time (not knowing what it was for), but today it's gone (and only virus database updates are available). No idea what's going on with that... I posted more details in its own thread.

Is it possible to just use 8.0 as a on demand scanner? Just asking because I have Avast an can't use 2 anti virus programs at a time. Didn't know if there was a way you can not have it run in the background and have it just do on demand scans. [Like AVG 7.5]

I see in Programmes>AVG 7.5, there is an uninstall option, but i was thinking of updating to version 8 sooner rather than later, so would i need to uninstall or would version 8 overwrite 7.5?

My settings too, would they be copied over! or would i have to copy them out & add them to version 8??

Thanks

Couple of answers to a couple of recent queries:
Yes, 8.0 will overwrite 7.5 on install. No uninstall is needed.
Yes, you can turn off Resident Shield in AVG 8.0 paid for version. Not sure about the free version though.

Just a heads up... Looks like they stopped updating definitions for Antispyware 7.5 Free about a week or so ago. I've been unable to connect to the server for updates for that for the past 1-2 weeks. But I've got SAS Free, so that's not *that* big a deal.

Also, it looks like 7.5 AV Free had a program update about a week ago, but it was only offered for a few days (I declined to do that recommended update at the time), and then was gone and never came back (just virus definition updates have been available). So people are probably running two different program versions at this point. Details here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic154768.html

However, even without that here-then-gone program update, I have not had any reminder popups at all since June 26th.

Any thoughts?

to clarify

as from today( 6/7/2008) AVG Free antivirus 7.5 program is on Internal virus database version 270.4.5/1537 (released 6/7/2008)

you may wish to compare your version with this data?
and said antivirus program is still updating virtually daily with no problems

assuming you do not have avg 7.5 antivirus on your computer(?)this

http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=avg is a link to an avg 7.5 exe version 7.5.441(see bottom exe); you need to install that exe then update the definitions to the present version

if you do already have avg7.5 installed it should update to the version and definitions I gave above ; the program has NOT stopped updating ( yet)
