As those of us who upgraded to the latest version of Ubuntu all know, Firefox 3 beta 5 is installed by default and installing Firefox 2 doesn't seem to work!

Here's the steps I took to make it work.

Step 1: Completely remove Firefox 3 beta 5 using Synaptic:

Step 2: Install Firefox 2 using Synaptic
Step 3: install Firefox 3 beta 5 using Synaptic

Now you have both installed and you can run Firefox 2 by entering firefox-2 into a terminal or Run Application box. Firefox 3 can be run using the firefox command, or firefox-3.0 command. But they both try to use the same profile data, which leads to conflicts (for me, all my FF3 addons were installed for FF2 but did not work, for example). So, you need to create another profile, and therefore end up with one for each version.

Step 4: Close all instances of Firefox. Open a Terminal window and type: firefox -ProfileManager to open the profile manager:

Step 5: Create a new profile. I called mine FF2 but you can call it whatever you want:

Step 6: Now you can keep the profiles for each version separate. The downside being that saved passwords, bookmarks, history, etc. won't be shared between the two. If you left the Don't Ask at Startup box checked in the Profile Manager, Firefox (both versions) will use the default profile. To launch Firefox with a particular profile use the following syntax:

firefox-<version> -P <profile>

For example, I use the FF2 profile for Firefox 2 and the default profile for Firefox 3, so I have two launchers on my Panel:

firefox-2 -P FF2
and
firefox-3.0 -P default

I haven't tested everything thoroughly, but I haven't run into any issues so far.

I also made a crude FF3 icon so I could tell them apart, you can use it if you want or make your own. The default FF icon can be found in /usr/share/pixmaps.

It just goes to show that acting out of frustration (i.e. removing FF3 completely) can get you somewhere!

Wow, way above my head Amazing. I was going to upgrade to 8.04 and just go with
whatever version of FF they bundle up....Is updated browser a problem?
I was also going to use the upgrade from the update panel. I've heard it takes
many hours.....true?

Some people are unhappy with the version of FF shipped with 8.04 because it's still in beta. I know from experience that some of my websites do not render correctly in FF 3 beta 5.

The update panel path depends on your internet speed. Took me about 2 hours on a wireless connection.

Same here. I have the 8.04 live-CD coming in the mail (I'm that much of a newbie with computers). But if it's going to cause trouble that I can't get out of, I guess I'll have to turn my back on Ubuntu again. sad.gif

So the 8.04 live-CD got here today. Tell me if I have this straight:

I have ff3 beta 5 on the CD and my computer has FF2.

If I tell my computer to boot up from the CD, I'll have FF3 beta 5.

And if take the CD out of the drive and boot up as usual, I'll have FF2.

In other words, booting up from the live-CD won't uninstall FF2 from the computer, right?

That's right. The LiveCD will not do anything to your existing system or any applications installed there. That's the whole idea! Nothing from the CD will permanently affect your computer unless you explicitly tell it to.

Excellent! Thank you, Amazing Andrew.

Alas, once again I have been thwarted in my attempts to join the Linux family. I put the LiveCD in the CD tray, restarted my 'puter, and ... Windows XP opened up. huh.gif

So I restarted it again, and hit F12 to get to the Boot Menu (I have a Dell Dimension 3000), selected "4 = IDE CD drive", hit "enter" and ... Windows XP opened up. mad.gif

So now I have a thread over at Dell.com support forum looking for advice on how to get my 'puter to boot up from the LiveCD.

I beginning to suspect the cyber-gods don't want me near Linux.

Success! thumbup2.gif

Following a suggestion from the Dell forums, I put the liveCD in the DVD drive and Ubuntu loaded instead of Windows.

I think I'll be playing with this for the next few days to see what Ubuntu does.
