whenever i try to play a .avi video on WMP, i get a message saying

'the file you are trying to play has an exension (avi) that does not match the file format.
playing the file may result in unexpected behaviour. do you want to play the file?'

pressing yes plays audio only with no video.

any ideas?

Thanks

You didn't say which version of WMP you have. 11 is the most recent. Maybe you need codecs. you can download them at this link.

Try using VLC Player to see if it will play it. Checking the file with GSpot will let you know whether or not you have the proper codecs installed.

From what I read, it sounds like the AVI extension is wrong. I think it's supposed to another format like MPEG4, WMV, MOV, etc.
Try renaming the file extension or using MPlayer.

"If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way." - Bertrand Russell
