I've had a problem with my Vista Home Premium Toshiba Satellite Laptop for a few days now. I keep getting an error saying that "Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working" It sits there there for a second then says that "Windows Explorer is Restarting" The screen goes blank, then goes back to normal. I've had this problem before and RogueRemover Free solved it. But, I updated it and ran it again and it said nothing was found. I also ran a Norton virus scan yesterday with no results. Does anybody have any advice? Thanks in advance! |

Look in 'event viewer' to see what program or driver is causing the problem

Well, my system restore points don't go back far enough until this problem wasn't happening. I checked the Event Viewer and this is what it said:

i am having similiar problems with this. I get the error message when i close internet explorer its says it has stopped working and will restart but the only thing that has happened is that i have closed it. this gets really annoying because if you are not fast enough to cancel the error code it will restart internet explorer every time. my computer is new and has always had this problem i thought that updating windows vista would solve the problem but apparently not.

From your reply it looks like you are up to date.
Do you now have problems with Internet Explorer in addition to Windows Explorer? Do you still have the previous recurring error messages: "Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working... Windows Explorer is Restarting" Check the Event Viewer again and see the earliest time you had experienced the errors. See the description. Are there any files associated with Windows Explorer crashing? Have you installed any new programs during that time? Go to 'Add or Remove Programs' and see if you can remove any new programs installed during that time, and see what happens. See if there are any unrecognised programs present as well... which might have been installed by malware. |

Also you can try disabling any new add-ons to IE. Manage addons is quick and simple way to check new condition changes in IE.

Well, I don't use Internet Explorer. I use Firefox. So, I don't think that's the problem. And I checked the event viewer again, but it didn't say anything about an associated program the problem. Any other suggestions? It's getting really annoying and is starting to interfere with downloads completing and documents not being saved.

Did you manage to check 'Add or Remove Programs' to see if there are any programs that you may have installed when the problem started? Are there any unrecognised programs present?
I have been researching on your problem and many people seem to be complaining about it... and offering various suggestions... but I saw two which are closely related: one is talking about 'Windows System/Safety alert' and the other, 'WINDOWS WARNING'. I don't know if you have the same problem but try and see if either of these 'programs' are installed... Do this: Step 1) >>> When you boot or when the computer reboots press Ctrl+Alt+Del --> Task Manager --> go to Processes tab --> end task (explorer.exe) >>> Close the Task Manager i.e. by clicking the 'X' in the top right corner >>> Press the Windows Logo Key (usually near the Ctrl & Alt buttons, bottom left) + R --> type appwiz.cpl --> press ENTER --> This should open 'Add or Remove Programs' --> Scroll down and see whether any of these 'programs' (Windows System/Safety Alert (which does not belong to Microsoft Corp) and/or WINDOWS WARNING) are present --> If so click unistall programs... Remove 'Windows System/Safety Alerts' that DOES NOT belong to Microsoft Corp. If it tells you that the computer needs to be rebooted before the uninstallation and you must close all open applications, DO NOT click the close button on that window. Hit the X in the corner of the control panel and wait for the computer to restart. See if this solves the Windows Explorer errors. If not, try the next step: 2) Press Ctl+Alt+Del --> Task Manager --> On the bottom right, click New Task --> type C:\ --> using your arrow keys scroll down to C:\Program Files and press ENTER --> In the new Window, scroll down and on the left hand side select Control Panel --> select Programs and Features --> right down at the bottom of the page, look for 'WINDOWS WARNING' --> select it and click Unistall If it says you have to reboot to unistall, select NO and click 'unistall using recommended action'. Does it solve the error messages? Please note: I have summarised/adapted the two instructions above from elsewhere and I'm not sure if the instructions/wordings above can be applied word for word. Well, the two programs that Juha mentioned were not on the Add/Remove Programs list. And yes I do have DEP turned on.
Any other suggestions? |

I would have to suggest that you perform at least 2 free, online scans to ensure that malware isn't causing this. Here's some links:
