Well I mean, having Vista on your machine isn't really the end of the world I mean, con it could be worse. Atleast they are providing updates until 2009 and from there they are still going to give Security Updates until 2014! They are doing that for us but I just can't get why they can't keep XP for atleast another year so that people can feel more confident going into Vista sad.gif I mean if they waited one more year they can sort some more of the bugs out form Vista and after a year I am sure more people will be more confident shifting to it.

Platypus, it is the fact that people who are going to build new systems and who are planning on buying a new computer in around 2 months + is where the problem occurs (Actually already starting for me now). Those people won't have a choice but to go with Windows Vista due to the fact that XP has been permanently stopped from being sold and being put on new machines...that is what we are talking about smile.gif

??

I know what you're talking about, some other folk show signs of not being so clear on the issues, and need some factual information.

Direct OEM and Retail License Availability end date: June 30 2008

As of April 2008, Microsoft is extending availability of Windows XP Home Edition for OEMs to install on Ultra Low-Cost PCs. The new OEM end date will be the later of either June 30, 2010, or one year after the general availability of the next version of Windows.

System Builder License Availability end date: Jan 31 2009

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx

If people must purchase a system with Vista pre-installed, OEM Vista Business and Ultimate versions include downgrade rights to enable users to revert to running Windows XP Professional or Tablet PC edition.

So when you mean they extend the date to install Windows XP Home Edition on Ultra Low Cost PC's, that means computer stores selling PC's that are second hand and under the price of let's say $500 are still allowed to put XP on them until that date? Also, when you say System Builder Licence, is that for people that are building computers at their computer store and that licence allows them to put XP on their meaning people who want to buy an XP built computer can do so once the June 30th deadline is past?

Sorry if this is confusing but I myself am confused crazy.gif

Platypus, for computer handicapped people (cough cough, parents >_>) they won't know the full impact of retiring Vista.
....I doubt both my parents even know the different between Windows 3.1/95/98/2000/ME/XP/Vista.
And another thing... some of us just can't afford or aren't allowed to buy the installations. Which is why this is a big issue for me.

I "third" that. Ubuntu seems like a very good choice. I must learn the whole compiling thing though I have no idea where to start on that ohmy.gif Modules mean nonsense to me >_<
And is it true that ubuntu is stuff you find on your show? o.O
NO need to compile, that's what Distributions are for: so you don't HAVE to compile anything as it's already compiled and tested and wrapped up with a bow.

Of course, you can compile if you want to; it makes you feel like an Uber-Hacker!

Yep, I know that distributions are already compiled tongue.gif I was referring to those USB ones, for extra applications you need to compile. Something I have absolutely no idea about sad.gif

No I wouldn't do that smile.gif I would buy 2,000! Even if you sold them in 2010, don't forget that Microsoft would still be releasing the security updates and you would have to download a heck of a lot of updates tongue.gif

Does anyone know if there is a legit site that is ordering many many legit copies of XP and selling them after the deadline but not making any profit? Or is it illegal to sell XP like that after the deadline?

I don't know of any sites but I'm pretty sure its not illegal.
I did find something though on Amazon.com The Ask Leo Store he sells copies of XP on Amazon pretty cheap. It doesn't look like hes making any profit on it either smile.gif
Have a look David and/or anyone else, and tell me what you think smile.gif

Edit: Its XP home dition by the way, and comes with SP2.

I am new and just joined and agree that is is a baaaaad decision by Microsoft but....back in the early 90's when they came out with Windows NT - they never planned to have a Windows 95 - they were only going to have a Windows NT server and a Windows NT Workstation which would not be DOS based - they never planned to continue with a DOS based platform at all but the users - mostly the gamers got together and raised such a stink that Windows 95 became a quick add on to the table - and it continued to be a platform until Windows 2000 which had a DOS box option - my point is that if you are as mad as hell about this this then speak up and out wherever you can - that petition thing I saw back in another entry and any type of of group or blog or petitiion people can find to sign will help - make noise - threaten to move to other OS - can only help - IMHO clapping.gif

As I understand it, it's not illegal to sell XP after the end date (despite what MS would like people to think) but rather it's against the license that retails have to sign.
