So M$ won't send out support XP after 2009? You'll have to buy Vista to get security updates? Gah!!!! mad.gif

I agree with Teenage.Zombiee: this is bullying, plain and simple. Maybe I should partition my Hd and start experimenting with Linux...?

I "third" that. Ubuntu seems like a very good choice. I must learn the whole compiling thing though I have no idea where to start on that ohmy.gif Modules mean nonsense to me >_<
And is it true that ubuntu is stuff you find on your show? o.O

September, 2007 Windows XP SP2c will be available to system builders from their distributors.

January 31, 2008 End-of-Life for product availability of Windows XP for all channels except System Builder.

January 31, 2009 End-of-Life for product availability of Windows XP for the System Builder channel.

I will bet they will change their mind again and back down

You bet they will! M$ are all about the money and if they take away XP they won't be making any money as Vista is the worst OS in history.

Ha, I bet they're trying to make more money by making people buy a new machine or installation CD and converting to Vista. Although it's seriously a bad idea. But, I'm not complaining, plenty of time for Linux to take over my computer thumbup2.gif

Sadly I am trying to buy Windows XP for a computer that my brother has, the sad part is that already no one is stocking it and my only choice is to get it from a computer retailer and since it is OEM I am required to buy hardware for it too sad.gif

I think we are going with Vista, not that we should really encounter many errors. This whole business with the discontinuing of XP is already taking it's toll!

It's the most annoying thing to also be forced to buy hardware when you don't need it. Imagine what all that extra money could be used for...

NO need to compile, that's what Distributions are for: so you don't HAVE to compile anything as it's already compiled and tested and wrapped up with a bow.

Of course, you can compile if you want to; it makes you feel like an Uber-Hacker!

Ok before I say anything else, I must say that GUI in Vista looks very appealing (To me) but the amount of resources it takes up has gone to far I think. Also, this doesn't really occur for me but the amount of drivers and some programs (Especially ones required for businesses) that don't have compatibility with Vista is also another reason why they can't stop XP form being sold.

I know a bit of hysteria is good fun and all that, but why do people keep saying security updates will cease in 2009?

The Product Lifecycle for Windows XP:

http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/sea...Filter=FilterNO

Mainstream support is retired 14th April 2009. For the duration of mainstream support updates will include security hotfixes and may include updates to address non-security issues of functionality.

Extended support is retired 8th April 2014. During extended support phase, MS provides security hotfixes but doesn't provide non security related software updates.

And why are people whingeing about superseded software becoming unavailable? What a surprise! After all, people who want Windows 98, not XP, can toddle down to the store and buy a nice new copy can't they? Oh wait, no, they can't. But the ones who think Windows 98 is the spawn of the devil can still pick up good old Windows 3.1 can't they? Umm, no of course not...

Have some sense, people! It's been known since September last year that the availablility was extended, but would end. It's still available for two months, if you want a copy, go out & buy one...

And sign the petition to have XP continued...

If you go into the computer stores where they have the OS boxes, you should see the Windows Xp area of boxes. You will notice there is cheaper one which should say update smile.gif This only works for machines running Windows 2000, Xp or Vista

And 98/SE/ME

I am sorry I just found out that this is no longer available? You can only get this update with Windows Vista.

So you actually going to buy them DaChew tongue.gif I would invest LOL.

Platypus, it is the fact that people who are going to build new systems and who are planning on buying a new computer in around 2 months + is where the problem occurs (Actually already starting for me now). Those people won't have a choice but to go with Windows Vista due to the fact that XP has been permanently stopped from being sold and being put on new machines...that is what we are talking about smile.gif
