I reinstalled windows xp media center 2005 after installing a new hard drive.
After doing so, the information balloons in the taskbar doesn't appear, just
get popping sound. For instance, when using the safely remove hardware, I
don't get the balloon stating it's safe to remove. Only hear the popping
sound. When resting the cursor over an icon, I get the name of the program
and right clicking brings up the menu. But, I can't get the information
balloon.
I read a tip to log off and log back on to fix it but it didn't work. Any suggestions?

Tried it and it didn't work. Just got the pop sound again when I right clicked on the icon (in taskbar)and selected Fix ToolTips. When I tried it from the desktop icon, I get a message about older version of scripts running, click OK to replace. Then nothing happens. Thanks, anyway!
Any other ideas?

Hi j54ams

That tip works if your popups are hiding behind the taskbar.
The only other suggestion I have is to check in Folder Options.

Solved my problem with TweakUI. There is a setting to select "enable balloon tips." Thanks to all who tried to help me!

start --> run --> regedit
navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify
in that folder there should be a BallonTip key and its value should be 1
if the key is not there click Edit --> New --> DWORD Value and call it BalloonTip and set its value to 1
base is hexidecimal
do not screw with anything else in there, this is your windows registry
