I downloaded the free Open Source fax program Hylafax.tar.gz. The Googled answer to how to open the file sais to type gunzip Hylafax-4.4.4.tar.gz (I assume at C:\) which promptly tells me that Gunzip is not a supported file type.

If some kind person would show me how to open the downloaded file Hylafax-4.4.4.tar.gz I would be most grateful.

Many thanks,

Stuartp77

Hey there Stuartp77.

A tar.gz file is a compressed archive file, similar to .zip files. Tar.gz files (or "tarballs") are most commonly found used on Unix and Unix-like computers. You'll need a Windows program, like Winrar, that's capable of opening tarballs.

PS
From what I can tell, Hylafax is not for Windows; fancy switching to Linux?

Thanks Tennage.Zombiee and Amazing Andrew for your replies.

I seem to have opened the files from Hylafax but it doesn't tell me how to send a fax. I've got all these folders and files listed but when I click on any files, say "Send Fax" up comes the box saying "Windows cannot open this file".

I have no idea what to do other than go and buy fax software to use on my XP laptop. If you know the program, I'd appreciate some help, but if not, please don't worry replying.

Thanks again for your attention,

Stuartp77

As Amazing Andrew stated Hylafax is Linux server software.
It will not run on Windows.
