Also works in XP.

You could set the computer to notify you in case you accidentally hit the CAPS LOCK, NUM LOCK, & SCROLL LOCK keys.

Win XP:

Click on Start > Settings Control Panel > Accessibility Options.

On the Keyboard tab, click the “Use Toggle Keys” checkbox.

You'll here a beep whenever you hit the caps lock key. If you also want it to flash:

Click the Sound tab and check the “Use SoundSentry” checkbox. And make your selection in Choose Visual Warning drop-down box.

Vista:

Go to Control Panel > Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use > Turn on Toggle Keys.
Go to the top of the page

Amazing Andrew:

hysterical.gif That's a good point.

hillbillyqreek:

I'm not a very good typist and I was constantly hitting the caps lock instead of shift.
In Vista, does that method also beep or flash? If so,wouldn't I be trading one annoyance for another?

Not being argumentative, just curious.

Yes. (Disclaimer):Although I don't actually own, Vista, I set it up for a friend that does because he was experiencing similar. It would probably help more than annoy. It would at least make you aware of how often you hit the key & keep you from having to go back & retype. Handy thing if you're runing a business, doing schoolwork, typing résumés, etc...In public forums such as these, all caps is equated to yelling, even though the authors intentions are otherwise.

hillbillyqreek:

Thanks for your input. I had already disabled the key when I first posted, just thought others might find it helpful in their particular case.
I guess what it boils down to is personal preference.

Fun fact: In Office 2007, if you have capslock on and you type a word like tHIS, when you hit space, it will change the word to This and turn off your caps lock. Pretty cool! At first I thought it was a Vista thing, but alas it only works in Office. My reaction time is slower than my fingers, so before I had quite a bit of text to retype if I forgot to turn off capslock smile.gif

For those who didn't know, a quicker and easier way to activate and deactivate Toggle keys is to hold num lock down for 5 seconds, and a message will appear reading telling you that Toggle Keys has been switched on.

Caps Lock :: Shouting as Windows :: Operating Systems

A poor substitute for a truly spiritual experience.

Why is it stupid? Caps lock, in my opinion, is an annoying, generally useless key. I was glad to find a method to disable it. If I need CAPS, I use the SHIFT key. As I stated in another post, it comes down to personal preference. I don't think it's stupid to SUGGEST a way to make a persons computer experience a little bit better.

I think you will find that post#10 simply misunderstood the idea of making the CAPS LOCK key 'beep' if accidentally pushed.

This is one of the first things I do on any computer as this can be one of the most infuriating niggles.

Good tip, cheers thumbup.gif

(Amazing Andrew. ???????? I know what you are getting at, but pretty obscure. LOL)

I find that if you look at what you type, while you are typing you don't have to go back and retype so much. maybe instead of disabling buttons one could simply become a better typist... .though I do think caps lock is kind of pointless and in a crappy place.
