Hello smile.gif

I know two ways to do this.

Option 1
Download and install Yahoo Messenger
When installing make sure you select all the options it gives you (haven't done this in a while so I'm not exactly sure how its done)

Then to change yahoo to your default email provider open IE > tools > Internet Options > Programs > Email: Yahoo Mail.

Option 2 (if option 1 fails or if you don't want to install/reinstall yahoo messenger)
First I recommend backing up your registry with Erunt

Go here and download yammapi.dll and copy it to this location
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Common
Note: If these folders do not exist create them

Next click Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad and copy the information below in the quote box and save it as yahoo.reg
Note: when saving next to "save type as" select all files or this tweak will not work

QUOTE
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail]
@="Yahoo! Mail"
"DLLPath"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Yahoo!\\Common\\YMMAPI.dll"
"LocalizedString"="Yahoo! Mail"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Yahoo!\\Common\\YMMAPI.dll,-201"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\InstallInfo]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\Protocols]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\Protocols\mailto]
@="URL:MailTo Protocol"
"EditFlags"=hex:02,00,00,00
"URL Protocol"=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\Protocols\mailto\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Yahoo!\\Common\\YMMAPI.dll,-201"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\Protocols\mailto\shell]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\Protocols\mailto\shell\open]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\Protocols\mailto\shell\open\command]
@="rundll32.exe \"C:\\PROGRA~1\\Yahoo!\\Common\\YMMAPI.dll\",MailToProtocolHandler %1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\shell]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\shell\open]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Yahoo! Mail\shell\open\command]
@="rundll32.exe \"C:\\PROGRA~1\\Yahoo!\\Common\\YMMAPI.dll\",OpenInboxHandler"

Once saved open the file and when it asks you if you want to add it to the Windows Registry select "yes"

Let me know of these work smile.gif

I THINK you are actually kinda asking the 'wrong question' as such?

I think you actually need to decide which of these two e mail clients already on your computer you wish to set as your default email client?

you have both Windows live and Outlook express?

hopefully , if you go to tools/internet options/programs/ please tell us what program it specifies IN 'email'?

I checked Internet Options and one of the choices for mail is Yahoo Mail. I set it as the default to see what would happen when I clicked on a mail to link, and the sign in page for Yahoo opened.
Not sure why you don't see it as an option, unless it's linked to Yahoo messenger. Which is installed on my computer but only my daughter uses it, from her desktop.
Yahoo mail isn't really an email client, it's a webpage. Outlook Express, Windows Mail (in Vista), Outlook, Thunderbird, etc are email clients, which are 3rd party programs set up to work with your internet provider's mail service.
Sometimes web-based mail such as Yahoo can be configured to work with a client, but generally only with the paid versions of the mail.

If I'm reading your question right, you want to be able to do things like click on e-mail links and have them open up in Yahoo! mail, right? Take a look at POPPeeper, I think it's just what you want.

Thanks to teenage zombiee, amazing andrew and queen-evie for your responses. Yahoo messenger was just the ticket to make yahoomail show up in internet options/programs. djd1.

ruby1, I have set yahoomail as my default email in internet options. After I downloaded yahoomessenger it appeared as a choice. Now if I want to click on a link or file to email it my yahoomail account opens.

Can't you just go to set program Access and defaults on the start menu?

yahoo mail isn't a program so I don't think that will work.

I worked hard(not really) to make things simple again. Yahoo corporate removed the original small installation utility from their website forcing all users to install their bloatware yahoo messenger/toolbar; and so after YEARS of a lack of an easy online solution, I reconstructed a stepless installation from available online methods. Simply run the exe to restore Yahoomail as the default mail application in Internet Explorer including shortcut capabilities :-)

enjoy!

p.s. further information inside exe (compressed rar) - tested on Windows XP.
