BleepingComputer.com: Svchost.exe X14?

I am runnning Windows Vista on my PC, thats been around since May '07. I am noticing really, really slow responses and conflicts elsewhere on my PC... I was hoping to get some advice on how to figure out which of this is genuine, and which are not. They all claim to be from the same "C:\Windows\System32" directory. I have a feeling not even the folk at Microsoft would have 14 of the same process running.

Another worry,
Some of these processes run fairly high on the memory usage. I have 2 of these that average about 12,500k of memory usage, 1 (sometimes 2) that run been 40-50,000k, and rest are mixed from 200k to 5,000k. I have tried to track down where they are coming from, but as stated above I'm having no luck. I've also tried using the end process option on the higher performers and they keep starting over. I've never seen them run this high before in nearly 15 years of computer usage... Some guidance would be very well recieved, thanks!

I've got 13 svchost.exe processes running in my brand new copy of Vista Business - and haven't installed SP1 yet.

Svchost.exe is sorta like a front for running other processes - so each one will have from one to 25 or more programs running underneath it. You can see what these are by right clicking on each one and selecting "Go to Service(s)". The Services tab will then come to the front and all the services associated with that svchost.exe process will be highlighted.

Then you can either use the Startup List at the top of this page ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ ), or you can google each of them to see what they are.

HI ,,, if you want a bit of help working out which service you need or you want to change the settings of some of them to try and get back some of your pc's resorces,,, John has given great advice,,, you could also take a look at this site called the black viper,,, it tells you what they are and gives you a choice & recomendations of how to set that service,,, there is also a tab for setting up xp services,,,,, good luck
