BleepingComputer.com: Sp1 Driver Issue

I recently did an upgrade from XP Home SP2 to Vista Home Premium. There were no problems. All installed hardware was compatible. I have Vista set for automatic Windows updates. Vista SP1 did not come across as an automatic download, so I attempted to download manually. I get a message to the effect that because of a driver conflict, SP1 is not currently available for my computer. The driver in question is for Sigma Tel sound driver. The version that is on my computer is Sthda.sys version 5.10.4943.0. Must be Sthda.sys version 5.10.5762.0 or higher.

After checking on Microsoft tech site, I am led to believe that Vista SP1 will be available in April for those systems that were hardware compatible for original upgrades or clean installations of Vista, but not for this first release of SP1.

Can anyone confirm this? Thanks in advance.

I also did find that driver and downloaded it. However, when I attempted to install the driver, it failed, with a error message saying that was not the correct driver for my system. Apparently, the sound hardware in my system, which was bought with XP installed, and the hardware in a E510 from Dell with Vista factory installed are different. The driver for XP re-installed with no problems.

Appears I'll have to wait until Microsoft has a solution. I don't think I'm missing anything major with the current SP1. I do like to keep my system up to date.

did you put your service tag number in the search box?

people are reporting overall a big improvement in vista w/sp1

I did get that driver to update. But, guess what? It too is not compatible with the SP1 for Vista. Maybe I'll have to disable the onboard sound and install a PCI sound card that is compatible. I'll keep trying.

give dell and MS a couple of more years and they will get the bugs out

Problem solved. Even though Windows Update would not download SP1 because of the driver conflict, I was able to download the larger update file and install it successfully. Everything seems to work and appear OK, even the sound with the conflicting driver.
