This is a very basic newb question, but can someone help me figure out Wireless stuff?

I have a new laptop and am new to the whole wireless connections and stuff, but a few guys I know always take their laptops in there cars and drive around town using it on the internet............. ohmy.gif

I was wondering what it takes to do that, money isnt an object..

I know you probably need a card and I heard about routers but only let you go 150 feet I dont get how they can drive in there cars. One of my friends said something about hooking up to cellphones but I dont know I just thought I'd ask ya'll here.

There are several ways of doing what you describe . I guess the most common is to contact your cellular telephone provider and see what equipment is available for your cell phone . The other is WiFi cells . Coffe shops , malls , airports , and some special purpose areas in some towns have "HotSpots" . WiFi cells that are free access . These are limited . The other option , which I don't advocate , is stealing signal . Some talk about chalkwaring . It started with people wandering with thier notebook PCs looking for open wireless access points in homes and buinesses . They then would mark the side walk with chalk to let other THIEVES know where a signal was . I'm sure there are other options out there but I think this covers the main ones . Have fun be safe and be legal .
