I have WMP11 and use it as the default for playing video / audio. I have around 12GB of Audio and 10GB of Video on my PC. I noticed today while learning to burn a CD using WMP that all the music I have played since I last reformatted is also stored on WMP. My question is if this is neccessary?. I like to keep my PC neat and uncluttered and try to keep on top of uninstalling older programs etc. Is there for example a tutorial or such explaining how to delete these files from the WMP library and to stop it adding any in future?. I have all my audio / video in appropriately named folders on my hard drive and would prefer to keep it this way rather than WMP making playlists I never use.

Don't normally use WMP myself as default, but it seems that a good place to start would be Options > Library > Monitor Folders. Make sure that Advanced Options are expanded. Click on the Learn more about monitoring folders link.
