WinXP Home junked up spyware compromise

Grinler - hope you're around!!

This one is the "big boss's" daughter's computer - acck what a mess. Getting script errors as well as something is trying to write XML code, also a warning from MS antispyware about "huntbar".

Also found out that there's no SP2 on it as well as she's been running without ANY virus protection - bah!!!

I can't get on the internet from thier house, so I have to run back and forth from work....help!!!

Click on start, settings, control panel and double-click on add/remove programs. From with add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist:

Media Pass
Elite Toolbar
Websearch

Do you know what these are? If you do can you tell me about them and if they are necessary to run for the programs functionality to work?

Hey Grinler!! I know the StarBand\Mission Control\HxuGuiControl.exe is a good program...they have StarBand Satellite Internet, I'm clueless as to the NettGain2000 or the Zstart.lnk. What do you recommend?

Is starband their isp?

Do they need a proxy server line:

Yes, Starband is the ISP, He's coming back tonight to re-install all their software, I suppose that the proxy will come back then.

I'll go over there and get the info for you, however, I'll have to answer you back from home...

I'll nuke those out of Hijack this and WE, after I do that do you want another log file? should I wait until tomorrow to install the SP2 and the AV software, then have the ISP come in then

Hey Grinler

Back from his house - had to fight my way thru traffic (1 signal in the whole town) - I'm still getting script errors and the MS AntiSpyware program says it is blocking a URL change to:

Also, I loaded the AV (Avast) and when it was scanning it picked up a trojan - COAL - I have ewido, I'll go and install that for him <sigh>

Loaded the firewall (ZA) but hesitated about loading the SP2 - I can go do that tomorrow after you review the logs.

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ROBERT~1\APPLICATION DATA\CLOSEM~1\

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.
