Hi all,
I keep getting a message that says I have AdTool.win32.MyWebSearch on my computer.I've done scans with AVG,SuperAntispyware, and my providers antispyware scan.None of them report anything about this spyware.Yet my providers security box keeps saying I'm infected.Any thoughts?

What toolbars have you installed?

What does this message say...and what is the origin of the message? Verbatim, please.

According to what I read, AVG should be able to handle it.

Do you use System Restore? If so, I suggest turning it off temporarily...when attempting to remove traces of malware.

Louis

Hello realgem63,

Please keep System Restore turned on. It is better to have an infected point to go back to than not have one if you need to roll back. Here at BC, we remove the malware first, then flush the restore points.

In order to provide you with the proper disinfection procedures, we need to know what operating system you have: Windows XP, Vista, etc.

Did you run the scans in Safe Mode?

Have you installed... Zone alarm or Nero lately?
These programs are adding the 'ask toolbar' and some AV's ... such as Kaspersky and BitDefender have been flagging the toolbars as:
not-a-virus:AdTool.Win32.MyWebSearch.bc

Please supply us with as much information as you can.

Thanks for all the replies.sorry I am just reading them now.I work 2 jobs and don't log on as often as I like.I haven't downloaded anything lately, but I'm only 1 of 4 people using this computer. And of course NO ONE downloaded anything!!!I haven't gotten a message saying I'm infected today,so maybe the scans got rid of it.One thing I might have done wrong was to not reboot after a scan.I did this after the last scan,so maybe that did it.I never scanned in safe mode.Is that recommended?I'll try to keep up with this as much as time allows.Again,THANK YOU for your replies!

MyWebSearch and MyWay are Internet Explorer toolbars often bundled with "free software" offered by third party software vendors. You can read more about it here. MyWebSearch and MyWay were pre-installed on new Dell computers starting in November 2004. Read here.

If you choose to remove it, and are using a Dell Computer, please follow Dell's "My Way Search Assistant removal instructions".

I have moved your Topic that includes a HijackThis log here to the Misplaced HJT Logs forum. You posted your log in a forum not intended for HijackThis logs analysis and probably missed the directions we provide to those who require assistance. We can only allow topics with such logs in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum. This restriction is to ensure you get the best help available, from those who specialize in malware anlaysis and removal. It also should prevent you from receiving ineffective or even potentially dangerous advice, whether well meaning or not.

Prior to posting a HJT log, we ask that you please read and follow all instructions in the pinned topic titled Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log. Following the steps in this Guide will allow the HJT Team to quickly help you with specific fixes for what may remain on your system.

Please complete all the steps in the Guide. If you have performed some of them already, then just continue with the next. If you can't perform a step, then skip it and continue with the next. The last step will include downloading and using the most current version of HijackThis if the first line of your log does not appear as follows:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 - Note: You are using an outdated Beta version of HijackThis and need to update.

Please note that it is important that HijackThis be run and a log created while in normal mode. If you run it and create your log while in safe mode, you will be asked to redo it again properly. When you have completed those steps, start a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum as directed in the Guide to post a new log.

Please DO NOT post any more logs to this topic, or post a log again in the wrong forum.

The Misplaced HJT Logs forum is strictly a holding area where the BC Staff can assist you with preparations for and to properly post your log. If you have a question or encounter a problem in the Prep Guide, please do post back to this topic; that is what it is here for.

When your new HJT log is posted in the proper forum, please reply to this topic with a link to your new topic. Once that is done, a Member of the HJT Team will analyze your log and assist you with step by step instructions to clean your computer or otherwise advise what needs to be done.

Thanks for your cooperation and good luck.
The BC Staff

Now that your log is properly posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic139327.html you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the thread titled "Haven't Had A Reply In Five Days?".

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.
