heres a history of the problem;

got a free copy of microsoft office from work. it was legal

installed it on my Dell 2350. two days later internet connection was lost.
called internet provider, cox, and they determined signal was good and walked me thru finding my NIC in device manager. i didn't see it and he told me to cantact Dell support. Called Dell and was talking to someone from India! anyways, we found the NIC under a device called 'unknown'. Here are some steps that i've done:

-uninstalled NIC rebooted
-downloaded updated drivers for chipset and NIC rebooted
-uninstalled NIC in safemode rebooted

note: rebooted and followed intructions on XP finding new hardware and loading drivers

-bought a new NIC last night. installed it rebooted.

both of the NIC's now show up inthe device manager as an "unknown"

i am stuck, what else do i need to do?

Have you run antispyware and antivirus software on your computer ? If not try Adware SE , Spybot S&D 1.3 , and AVG Free AntiVirus . If you are sing XP also use MicroSoft AntiSpyware Beta , but this won't work with 9 or ME .
If this fails use the "HiJack This " fourm . Hope this helps.
