Hi Rob, thanks for the welcome and especially for butting in! I'm actually on a double core, but because I'm on slow dialup, I don't want two instances running. There's no icon in the systray, so I'm guessing that the original one isn't running anyway. Just to be on the safe side, I tried taking it out of Services, but it's not listed there, either. Go figure. I'd guess I'm safe to just delete it from the wrong folder, yes?

This time, I think I'll try running it from the run command box with the -config parameter. It's been many years since I've used DOS commands, so we'll see what happens.

Keith, I couldn't tell from your last post if you knew this or not, so forgive me if I sound patronizing. A 403 error means that access to that page is forbidden. I'm guessing that the sys admin there has messed up a bit, especially considering that I got a 404 (page not found) error earlier for the downloads page.

Hi TMacK. Looks as though we cross-posted. Thanks for the welcome and the blog link. I've bookmarked it. Any thoughts on my dilemma?

I'd say "the sys admin there has messed up a bit" is an understatement if I'm forbidden access to my own post!

Hi Dialer.

Just so we are clear, what happens is that F@H sends you a Work Unit, your PC works on that for a few days and then sends the results back and gets a new WU. As KY said, your type of internet connection has little effect as it is only working for a few minutes on Folding.

Only the 5.03 GUI shows an icon in the Systray, but both 5.03 and the 5.04 Console will show up in Task Manager. I am running one GUI and 3 Consoles on 2 machines but it is a while since I set up the console versions so I won't attempt to run you through it. There is a set procedure which is well laid out in the Forums, but with that out of commission it makes it a bit tricky.

The 403 error on the Forums page appears to mean they are out of commission at the moment. [Cross posting madly here - See TMacK's reply above]

Keith.

You are not forbidden. No one can get on the site at the moment.

Thanks, Rob. So, are you saying that my machine will work on a WU even when I'm not connected to the net? If so, that doesn't make sense to me. Oh well. I'm going to do this anyway, and after a while I'll decide whether it's chewing up my resources (I'm usually running several graphics apps at a time).

As for setting it up, there are some instructions here - http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinConsoleInstall - that I'm going to try to follow. Since I have adult ADD, I tend to get easily confused, but given time I can figure out most stuff.

Yes, that is exactly it. As long as your machine is on, it will be working on a unit. When it has finished that unit it will keep trying to send the result back until you connect to the internet again.

If the 5.04 Console gives you too much trouble, just get the 5.03 GUI which is much simpler to set up. Only takes a couple of minutes and I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work for you. If you do want to do that, just delete everything to do with 5.04 first.

As far as resources goes, you can specify how much or how little you want the program to use. It is a 'soft' program in that it will fade away into the background when resources are needed for other things. I have mine set to use 80% of each core, and in Task Manager you can see them fading away when necessary.

Good luck.

Thanks, TMacK, I had bookmarked that link and then promptly forgot about it. <sheepish grin>

Meanwhile, the reinstallation, which I'm doing even as we speak (so to speak) is going well. But I don't know whether to say yes or no to this question: "Disable highly optimized assembly code?" What do you think?

Oh, that's very cool info, Rob. Thanks. I'm afraid I've already picked a very low number for core usage. Presumably it will let me reset that later on.

I found out why the first one didn't get completely installed. There had been a question about running it as a service at computer startup, and I had said no. This time I said yes, so it'll probably show up in services when I reboot.

And if the whole thing goes down the drain, I'll try the GUI version, although the site says it doesn't work with dialup modems.

Edit: Aha! I just found the info I really need to set up the console:

Good stuff dialer.

It sounds as though you have a good machine so you can safely allow the optimized code - lets you get units which are worth more points, but you do need to have your PC running quite a bit to meet the deadlines. I run mine 24/7 but some people like to turn them off.

It's working! My project is Amber, and its deadline is Dec. 29. Hooray - I'm very excited!

Only thing is, this time I accidentally listed my username as "yes." :trumpet: :flowers:

Thanks for all the help, everyone!
