I have been giving this Project a lot of thought and I need some feedback from the Team please; unlike many of you ,my computer is NOT on 24/7,but maybe, due to my work commitments, for only maybe 2 hours a day , unless I am involved in Professional study or am doing internet research for Projects .
I am Professionally indirectly linked TO the Folding project and have concerns that any contributions I might make cannot be completed and submitted in time ;thus, I might be 'folding' a 'significant 'protein whose results are needed ; BUT due to my lack of computer ( and me) availability and time the folding was NOT completed on time and that protein's folding has been 'lost' and therefore wasted including the research from the folding

due to these ( and other)concerns I have at present withdrawn as I do not wish to let either the team nor the Project down by my inability to complete the folding in the time- frames given

Hey Ruby, I never have my pc on 247 either. You can fold units though, that do not have a time deadline. Go to:

Folding at Home > Configure.. > "Advanced" tab

under "Deadlines" (at bottom section), chose: "Deadlineless"

This allows you to fold without being under "time preassure." You could even "batch upload" if you are on Dialup (Dialer...), by ticking the box below the drop down menue

-edit- those darn typoes...

Never fear of such. You do not have to be "on line" to F@H.

Any time you are on your computer and have the program working - it is folding - unless you shut it off/down.

If you give one hour of extra time before you shut your system off your are helping the project.

If you only do one WU a month it helps. One has a long time to complete a WU anyway.

Don't quit on this project. Every little bit helps. (The life you help save just might be mine?)

There are no critical projects assigned, so you let no one down. Just fold on as you can?

Bring it on M'Lady!!!

The F@H wiki has conflicting info as to whether or not there are any deadlineless WUs. For anyone considering configuring for them, it might first be worth a visit to the official F@H forum to verify one way or the other. Also, I find it handy to check on deadlines at the Currently Running Projects page. So far, not a one of my WUs has been completed at less than within 94% of the preferred deadline - even those that have taken 4 or 5 days to complete.

As for batch uploading, that's more difficult for me than uploading one WU at a time.

Fold on!

3. Use flags to control what WUs you get
Locate your shortcut to the folding @ home program or create a new one. Right click it and press "Properties". Unde the "Shortcut" tab, find the "Target:" box. Add -advmethods -forceasm to the end of the target outside of the quotes so that it looks something similar to:
"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe" -advmethods -forceasm

AMD processor users, however should not use "-forceasm" and add "forceSSE" like this:
C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe" -advmethods -forceSSE
The "-forceSSE" flag makes a big differance for AMD's. Watch your temps, though, it does seem to get a little warmer. Make sure the "SSE" part is capitalized.
does not work

I keep getting errors downloading and can't figger out why. If I uninstall F@H and then reinstall it everything works fine.
Any ideas on how to fix this/repair it without having to reinstall every time?

Which F@H version are you using and what OS?

I have both Vista and XP home. I only use the 5.3 console with the Vista as it doesn't like the other versions.
Still sometimes get an error that says that F@H has to close. I close it and restart it without having to D/L again.

The XP system I'm still running on the GUI 5.4v only because I want to show others here the gambit.
I do get some D/L errors if I'm taking on a new core. But not often.

Most of the errors I get are on uploading the finished WU's. And I charge that off to an overloaded Stanford server?
I only upload now between 30 minutes past the hour up to the hour. Never from 1 minute past the hour to 30 minutes past.

Sounds stupid, but it normally works for me.

Try running with the -verbosity 9 flag. It might provide the info you need. Also, as KY suggested, some of the Stanford servers have issues. The Pande team or forum admins will respond to posted logs in the F@H forum: http://foldingforum.org/index.php

Oddly enough, even on dialup I rarely have d/l or u/l problems. <shrug>

It would appear that I'm using an outdated version (5.03) which is interesting since I downloaded it from their site - must've read something wrong!

I'm using 64 bit Vista BTW - gonna head off and look for more recent versions......

Ah - 64 bit Vista. I don't know what you are talking about there Willis, and have no experience with the 64 bits...

Hi Yano, nice to meet you!

Not me, but from what I've read, they're providing the fastest turnaround on WUs as well as handling the big ones.

Well done Johannes. Could do with a few of those.

Went home for a few hours on Sunday to collect my repaired monitor and saw a nice little Acer Aspire, so have done what I threatened to do, LOL, and walked out with it. Set up 2 more F@H Consoles last night and it is rocketing thru' them.

Haven't had a chance to view results lately as this HotSpot is astronomically expensive. Have spent over $NZ130 since Christmas, but the availability is marvellous.

Cheers to All,

Fold on friends.

lol, the bigger ones seem to have smaller frames. I am proceeding faster than anticipated. I only have my desk setup to fold, but will format this system and my sisters old laptop soon and put F@H then on both machines.
