I've been running the World COmmunity Grid client for about a year now, and I would use this one if it wasn't for that. It wouldn't be practical nor beneficial to use multiple processor hogging programs at once, right? Oh well, I'm working for the same cause still.

Unless I am confused, and these are 2 different programs for the same database.

World Community Grid Performs 14,000 Years' Work in Nine Months

By K.C. Jones, TechWeb News
August 19, 2005 (5:20 PM EDT)

It would have taken a single PC more than 14,000 years to analyze the many ways human proteins can fold into shapes that promote, or interfere with, health. That analysis is 75 percent complete – in only nine months - thanks to the combined work of 133,673 computers.

Complete article on the Human Proteome Folding Project

Alright! Glad to hear of the progress. smile.gif

Folding @ Home Distributed Computing

QUOTE
Our goal: to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases

What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help by simply running a piece of software. Folding@Home is a distributed computing project -- people from through out the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer makes the project closer to our goals.

Say hello to another 38444 Teammate smile.gif

I was going to do this a while ago... unfortunately when i first read the story, i was on my box at home. Now that i'm on my box at state, i'm going to run F@H whenever i'm at class or sleeping thumbup.gif

Unfortunately, i can't throw my PC into 100% usage because it's noisy as a beast when it's stressed.... very noisy fan.....

Edit: Question: I have the gear running in my toolbar, and i (assume) that the program is folding (it is when i click on "display"). However, if i don't have the "Display" open, and i check my Task Manager, it says i'm not using any of my CPU's power..... So, does the program only work if i have the Display open, or as long as there's not a yellow cross on the cog? BTW: I currently have the Processor Percentage marked at around 50% in the Configure option of the F@H program.

Another Edit: It would seem that NCSU has their own folding team..... (currently ranked 95 with 210 users)......... now begins my debate..... should i join BC's team or my school's team...... And google has their own team? Ouch....

Awsome. :D

Glad to have you aboard.

I'm gonna try to ask my teacher in IT class if we can put this on our computers. (the only computers w/o DeepFreeze). I'll probably have to create a new name (not my yanowhiz one) but who cares. I'd like to see the statistics and see it go to a good use. smile.gif

Well I just saw this and downloaded it.

How long does it take to install and start? I seem to be at this DOS screen for a while now.

It's at completed 250000 out of 12500000 steps <2>

Sorry for double post. I just don't know if it is running properly and can't find info in FAQ. I'm running in a DOS window. I've completed 625000 of 1250000 which is 50% of something. I shut down once and had to reinstall V 5.02 to restart it. There is no Folding @Home entry in 'all programs.' When I tried to install v5.03 it worked as far as putting the program in 'all programs'. But when I try to open that it said a version is already running and operation stops. So I'm running the DOS type. Can someone tell me how to upgrade? I'm supposed to be able to pause and see other things. Thanks

I tried this a while ago. All it did was raise the power bill(using cpu full time isnt free) and make my pc slow. It would try and download the new things whenever I connected and send the old and that meant on dial up slowing me down. I got rid of the agravating thing. Its not for me.

I see how it could help so im not saying its a bad thing. Its like what NASA does with its super pc that has like 2000+ cpu's in it. It does stuff that would take a normal 1 cpu pc 18 years to do. It did this task im thinking of in just 80 hours!

Thanks CGM3, I appreciate your answer and your situation, also glad you at least gave it a shot. I'm running it on a fast PC P4,hyperthreading ,2 gig Ram,full broadband etc. I've no problems with speed and it's costing me .75 cents a day, not a problem for me. It's not affecting anything else I do. I just don't think it is running correctly as I've stated. Also it not installed correctly, don't know why. In 10 hours of operation it has done 55 %(6875000) of a 12500000 project. I want to know if that is good or what amongst other info I'm supposed to have?

Versions 5.02 and 5.04 for windows are the console versions. Which are more customizable. However, the only probme I had with it was that I would always be folding some good time. Like maybe a week or so. I just went back to 5.03 smile.gif

the only way I could recommend pausing the console would be to reinstall it.

When you first setup the console make it save it's progress every 3 minutes instead of every 15 minutes.

Then just close our of it, when you need a break, or a pause.

I hope I'm not treading on anyones toes, but if you check this section of the forum you will find a
thread titled 'Berkeley Open Infrastructure For Networked Computing'.

It is a very similar set-up to Folding@Home, but it covers more and different projects.
If you would like any more details, try 'Googling' BOINC
or, better still, visit BOINCUK / Team Lookers where you will
find lots more information on the different BOINC projects as well as an active forum.

We currently have only 4 active members. smile.gif Anybody else want to help a good cause, and it's free!

A little tid bit of why I run F@H: Hopefully in the future (by the time I have grandkids) the diseases this program helps to find cures for will help my grandchild or my future generations or even possibly me. You never know when it could come back to help.
