ah, I joined... and i have my computer set....

Anyone know about how long it takes for a frame with say, 1ghz of processing power on continiously to complete? I'm just wondering, so I can plan things out.

Hi Vaerli and welcome to the BC's F@H.

Many factors determine the speed of the folding process.

A "frame" is comprised of a number of steps - depending on the core in use.

Your processor, RAM, number of resident programs running on your system all affect the folding speed.

With the console model of the F@H program, one can also determine the % of CPU usage.
A few minutes after initializing, the console program will start to show a time estimate of the folding process.

ah, I see.

frames take forever... especially with my 2.0 ghz P4, and on top of that, I got a 1500 frame thing...

Vaerli, with that CPU you could set a 75% useage for the F@H program and probably not notice any real difference in your other processes, unless you are working a major computation program also.
Besides, the F@H is designed to run secondary to all other basic operating programs.
And you can pause the program as needed also to do other CPU intensive work.

yeah, well I have to disable it sometimes, like when I'm using the GIMP, or some other game. Starcraft shouldn't die from it though...

Thanks for the welcome...

Anyone have any troubles viewing the stats page over the last 12 hours or so? I couldn't get anything updated after 5 hours last night on both folding.stanford.edu and kakaostats.com

I am in process of putting my "new" old laptop to a format and installing opensuse. will then use it for folding too. Should not be on as often as my main pc, but I guess as long as it folds it folds...

Oh and welcome to all new members of the BC F@H team.

YH - every flip of a fold counts and helps.

I have a little 256 system that stumbles along on its own and I sometimes forget to check it and put up the results.
It may take it two weeks to complete a small assignment.

Fold on Friends. (except rowal5555 who is running overboard now. Watch out Yano!)

Greetings to all old and new folders.

Desktop was playing up so had to pop home before it broke me with nonstop uploading. LOL. Installed LogMeIn on each now so will be able to access any one without travelling halfway round the country. Petrol is too expensive for that carry on. crazy.gif

It appears that the investment in a couple of laptops is paying big dividends in Folding results, I have been very pleasantly surprised.

Look out Yano. My 10 years to catch you is down to a couple of months. LOL. Better find a few more relations to run F@H whistling.gif

When you are connected 24/7, you don't realise how much is going on in the background. With the 2 laptops in my tent finishing an average of 2 WUs/day, each WU takes 15 minutes to upload and at 10c/min it soon mounts to quite a bit of money but, all for the cause. Be home again in a few weeks and all will be back to normal.

The weather in Central Otago has been superb as usual, over 30C most days. Not really looking forward to coming back to the coast and the sea breezes.

Fold On Team. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif
Cheers

My desktop was complaining, so am taking a break from folding.
*TMacK waiting for garage sales to start back up, so can get an old unit (or two) just for F@H.
