Where did I said this fix is going to back up registry?

QUOTE(farbar @ Apr 28 2008, 12:31 PM) *
It could be that the fixes you do are temporarily because the changes won't save to registry. It is just a hypothesis but it it doesn't hurt to try:

1. Download REG File Association Fix unzip and apply it.

2. Check if you can backup your registry. if yes move on to the next step.

2. Perform the repair, IP release, renew and flushdsn then reboot.

What I meant and failed to explain clearly was this: Regedit should export the registry and save it as a .reg file. But if the .reg file association is corrupted backing up the registry is not possible. So in order to backup the registry you need to restore default .reg file association and that is what this fix does. (step 1).

Then the registry should be backed up of course by using regedit (step 2).

Well, I found this Canned Speech that worked for backing up my registry. thumbup.gif

So I now have a back-up of my registry.

I got lost though. What should I do now to try and fix my problem regarding having to release and renew my ip all the time?

You are most welcome DaChew, and thank you for asking as it clears how there is a need to use a clear language, and that is what I sometimes forget.

But still it remains to explain to DocSatan that all the effort was to backup registry with regedit, not because the backup made by regedit is better than Erunt. No, Erunt is much better and could be easily accessed via recovery console. But the question was whether the changes to registry would be preserved/saved by regedit or not. When you run those commands would the registry changes be saved or they would be lost because regedit can't handle .reg file? So backing up registry was not the aim but a test of windows registry editor.

However I leave it as it is now as I feel it is said enough.

Sorry if I am not following your direction well enough. Thanks anyway for your help, both of you.

My friend who built my computer says that i'll just have to keep releasing and renewing my ip. Not a big deal, just thought it odd to have to keep doing that.

Thanks again.

Doc.
