No I havn't added any tweaks as of yet DaChew......was waiting to hear back on the suggestion from my previous post where I asked if I should do a complete uninstall of Norton.

It seems that guy in your last post with the link has the same problem i am dealing with.

As I type this, the CCSVCHST is now showing 1,266,431 in the I/O Reads, with csrss showing 280,836, lsass showing 236,531, and System showing 125,504. All the others are showing under 50k.

I have been using nero and windows xp for aboout 5 years, every 6 months or so I have to uninstall nero, run their clean tool and reinstall, and I stopped at version 6.6, they are up to 8.x

I stopped with office 2003 and norton's 2003

If it ain't broke don't fix it

:flowers:

DaChew.....u suggesting I remove my Norton from the norton site ( the .com/nrt) or dl the repair thing from the link you showed ?

LoL, thanks for the help everyone !

evidently you are NOT doing the folding program

as TO Dear Norton? I would get rid of it, BUT you need to also consider what alternative antivirus program and other protection programs you wish to have

??try that ?

Well I've completely removed Norton 08, and whatever was left from 07.........did the NRT tool to get rid of it all, rebooted, and ran it again.

I've rebooted a third time and this dang thing is still just as bad.....I must be missing something here.......no one else has been on this laptop, I havnt had anything funky or big installed, i've cleaned up all the junk programs I had on here, got rid of stuff I never use, defragged, ran chkdsk, all the other malware stuff didn't get anything.....

Im starting to get testy now ! I'd rather not reformat/reinstall the os/hd, but it seems like I just might in fact have to.

Chew, you were talking about tweaks........such as ? , and any suggestions, and what will they do to help ?

Ruby, you got me wandering in circles now ! ! ! Im puzzled

Chris

Sometimes...a clean install...followed by careful, considerate installations and monitoring...is the best solution, for whatever reason.

Hey folks, here's the update....right now I'm on my PC at home. I got reading the post on how to completely remove symantec from my system, and I started following the directions in the post, including manually deleting the files in the registry that came up with symantec.

Got through that ok, and then got reading a post on the registry cleaners. I dl'd the one it suggested, ran them, and it found a whole bunch of junk/old registrys that wernt used, it prompted to clear them, and I agreed with it. It finished, and told me it required a restart.

Well, instead of rebooting, it came up with a blank black screen, and then it told me there was a critical windows startup file missing. It told me to boot from disc....thing is, my windows is loaded directly in the laptop, on a seperate HP Hard drive....and I couldnt access it.

I got around today to farting with it, and used one of my recovery discs it prompted me to make when I first got the laptop.

I lost all my files, music, pictures, and about 75% of my programs, but it is running once again, and runnin perfect as well.

The thing is, I only lost all the stuff on MY account. The wife's side still has all her files, music, and pictures. STRANGE !

Also, In documents and settings/users, it still has my old profile there, and then my new profile. In the old profile, it is empty, yet I can not remove it. How can I remove it ? in the user accounts section in the control panel, it only shows my new account and the wifeys.

Also of note, When windows corrected itself from my recovery disc, it RE-INSTALLED my Norton 2006 that came with the laptop as a pre-load....LoL

I dont wanna go through all this again ! ! ! LMAO !

Don't use a registry cleaner! Stories like yours are all too common after using registry cleaners and we just flat don't recommend them here.

I'll leave the rest of your questions for others with more experience than I've got in this sort of situation.

Good luck!

Well...the Norton 2006 can be uninstalled, Removing your Norton program using SymNRT - http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039?

Understand that none of us out here...have a clue as to how your restore worked, since you did not use a MS XP CD. So, I have no explanation for the profile situation. But I would delete any user account reflected that I did not want and which seemed to have no usefulness.

That does not mean that the Docs/Settings folders will disappear...I just don't know. But take a look at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/restprofile.htm

It doesnt show how to delete that old user account........it tells me it is completely empty, yet I can't remove it.

On another note, I'm on the laptop now, and boy, is it just zooming right along ! WoW !

Internal hardware devices are devices you install inside your computer. This is any piece of hardware that is inside the computer case. Ie motherboard, cpu, hard drive, graphics card, memory etc. One of the most frustrating aspects of working with computers is that just about every computers has different hardware devices. Even computer from the same manufacturers may have different motherboards, disk controllers, video cards, and network adaptors.
