Hi Baric

Deleting the pathways worked OK and I then created a single share from "DESK My Documents" called DESKFILES (Irealised it is not a good idea to leave spaces in the share name).

However, all of this produced the same result of "The Local Device name is already in use"

Pretty frustrating huh?

Barrie

Yes, it is frustrating. But where else can we have so much fun, huh?

IN your previous post, you were using the wrong command to map a drive, you had "o:" at the end, but it's supposed to be like this: "net use o: \\desk\whatever"

I also notice your workgroup names on the 2K and Vista systems are different. One is "WORKGROUP", the other is "HOMENET". That's a problem, bit it shouldn't cause the error you're seeing. However it needs fixing and might change the error. I would go to the 2K box and change the workgroup to "HOMENET". Do that by right clicking on My COmputer and selecting Properties, Network Identification tab, Properties button, and change the Workgroup name to "HOMENET", and press OK. You should get a message about welcome to HOMENET then a message to reboot for the change to become effective. Reboot. Are things any better?

The error itself indicates there's some kind of conflict between the drive being mapped and available drive letters. Immediately after you get the error, go to your command prompt on the Vista system, and issue the command "net use" and save the output. Then take a screen shot of the My Computer window and post that was well.

Yes I eventually worked out what I was doing wrong.

This is what net use looks like before I try to use the network drive.

C:\Users\barrie>net use
New connections will be remembered.

Status Local Remote Network

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK Z: \\desk\deskfiles Microsoft Windows Network
The command completed successfully.

And this is what it looks like after I try to list the files in the Z: drive.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]
Copyright © 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\barrie>net use
New connections will be remembered.

Status Local Remote Network

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK Z: \\desk\deskfiles Microsoft Windows Network
OK \\desk\deskfiles Microsoft Windows Network
The command completed successfully.

This I hope is the snapshot of the file structure on windows explorer.

No, this is a vista error I've had before..... I know the message indicates that problem, there was some sort of setting I changed before when I had this problem that fixed it.

What the last command I had you run did turns off Vista's auto recieve window (RWIN) tuning feature. I have had it cause problems in the past.

to delete all of the shares, you'd do this

net use * /delete

System error 1219 has occurred.

Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more
than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the
server or shared resource and try again.

This is caused by trying to login to DESK as 2 different users at once. This is probably Anonymous , and whatever user you are using.

to avoid that, use this command I gave you earlier:
net use x: \\desk\mydocuments <PASS> /user:DESK\<USER>

This way, you never create the Anonymous connection. Vista's share system has been revamped from XP/2k, and this is one of the downsides I've seen often.

The forum here will not allow you to put in images unless you host them yourself. You have to attach the image as a file.

Thanks for your help Billy. This certainly is a really odd one. You've taught me a lot about managing network devices along the way.

One thing I have just noticed is that the DESK (Win 2k) machine is not quite as perfect as I thought. Although it displays the LAPTOP files and lets me access them I do occasionally get the same error message i.e. it says that the LAPTOP drive is no longer available. However, the big difference is that it seems to correct itself and though the message box is a distraction it lets me carry on regardless. Now that really is funny.

Non-server versions of Windows Operating systems like what you would see on a desktop are limited to the amount of connections I believe that the limit is 10 connections.

If you run net config server found via a google search you will see the maximum amount of connections:

C:\Users\cryptodan>net config server
Server Name \\CAPRICORN
Server Comment

Software version Windows 7 Ultimate
Server is active on
        NetbiosSmb (CAPRICORN)
        NetBT_Tcpip_{4EC6C2E5-F20A-4CA0-8C45-4DB20613D3BD} (CAPRICORN)

Server hidden No
Maximum Logged On Users 20
Maximum open files per session 16384

Idle session time (min) 15
The command completed successfully.
