QUOTE(azara @ May 2 2006, 08:11 AM) *
Hello,

I am new to this site and would like to ask a question. I would like to buy Window XP and was wondering if anyone know how I could get it at a cheaper price. I found "OEM" Windows XP for $80. And I have seen some for $150. I wonder what everyone's thoughts are about "OEM". Are there any major advantages / disadvantages. Does $80 seem like a scam. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get cheaper version of WIndows XP.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thank you,
Azara

Greetings Azara, it appears your question was not addressed. Probably because this topic is a different subject. You could have started a topic with this question, or, searched for "OEM" under the "search" link at the top of the page. I will attempt to answer you here. Moderator, if I am wrong, please move it... Also, Azara, make sure you have turned on notification of replies.

OEM - dwam, I forgot what it stands for. It's other people's software. Sometimes made particularly for a brand of pc. I hate OEM. Sometimes it's mixed up with other software that you don't want or need. Nothing's better than an XP disk. R U shopping on e-bay by any chance? That is the worst place to shop for software (in my experience), some of the people post the important stuff in real small letters, or use jargon that an average newbie won't understand. I just found a page on microsoft where they offer to make you an XP boot disk. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 Of course, you have to have the software first. MS is really riding the downhill roller coaster: they forgot to make a boot disk for XP when they released it. Mr. Gates is the one lobbying for more H1 visas for a short term profit and a long term downward spiral (oops, politics, apologies). Vista (the next MS O/S will be released this month and hopefully XP will go on sale. I get the Sunday morning newspaper and immediately grab all the inserts for best buy and the other tech stores; look for what I want on sale and haul booty over there because they usually only have a very few. I have also heard of awful problems when trying to upgrade a PC. Back up your Outlook Express because you will lose it, it doesn't backup automatically. Finally there are instructions (I haven't verified) in the link provided above.

Good luck, hope I haven't confused the issue. As always, I am sharing only my experience and opinions. If there are corrections and clarifications, don't hesitate.
