Computer Freezing

My laptop has started freezing up periodically.
Sometimes I can still move the mouse, but nothing works.
I have to hold down the button on the laptop to restart it.

If I start in SAFE MODE, I don't seem to have the problem. <knocks on wood>


I've had some suggestions to run some things off of the Ultimate Boot CD. But I don't know how to use all of the programs on there.
I've run memtest86+ and it passed 20 tests over 11 hours. No errors. So it's not a memory issue.

I've run HouseCall at Trend Micro... but I'm not sold on the fact that it's accurate.
It had problems a lot... "Installation Failed" popup for instance... not sure what was installing.

Can someone start helping me repair or get rid of whatever is causing the problem?
I feel that my computer just may have a parasite of some sort on it. Not sure.

What is the make and model of your computer?
Have you tried any of these free, online scans?

I have run Trend Micro HouseCall several times.
I'm running BitDefender Online scan right now.

I ran a harddrive scan off of the Ultimate Boot CD today and it finally scanned.... but it said that it could not correct the errors.

So maybe the hardware issue is more probable that I thought.
I would have rather had a virus.
Hm.... :huh:

What are some good tools for hard drive diagnostics and ?repair?.
And how do I run them?

When starting up, I've often run into the Check Disk utility for Windows Vista.
It runs, checks, and says that there are ZERO bad sectors.
Seems to find no errors.

I'm so confused.

Why does my computer lock up !?!?!?!?

The Check Disk function in Windows will check the structure of the file system that resides on your hard drive - it will not check the hard drive itself.

To check the hard drive the best tool is a diagnostic from the manufacturer of your hard drive.

Ok. I've downloaded and installed the program.
I tried to run it right there... in normal Windows mode (where I had to be to install it) and it locked up 13minutes into it.

So I've restarted the computer in SAFE MODE and and beginning the scan again.

I'll post the results in the morning.

Actually, I was about to head to bed, right after the above post.

Then I looked at my laptop to see how the scan was going.
It's stuck on sector 21188863 of 312581808 ... and it's not moving. :huh:

The Elapsed time is advancing normally... and the Estimated Time Remaining is getting bigger and bigger.

Hm...
I'm going to bed and going to leave it. I hope it can continue... somehow. :huh:

My computer locked up about 15 minutes after my last message.

I restarted the computer.

Ran the program about but chose to do a QUICK TEST first...

Error Msg:

Status code= 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 65
(Error Log Test)
SMART self-test did not complete on drive 1!

Even though I feel it's useless.
I'm starting an Extended Test again.

Ok. I woke up and saw that the test says:

I have run into a few hard drives over the years that "tease" you as they slowly die and waste hours of your time.

A bad sector can be just that - a bad sector. But, it can also be a sign of an impending failure. If you choose to repair the bad sector, backup all your stuff and keep it backed up in anticipation of another problem.
