Upgrading The Processor

I currently have an hp d4100y desktop with a pentium D processor. I am curious if its possible for me to purchase a core 2 duo processor and swap it in, in place of the pentium D. I'm just curious as to whether the motherboard I have is compatible with the core 2 processor and if it would just be a situation of drop it in and go. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Added note: Processor updates/upgrades can only happen when the same number of pins (contact points) are involved.

Example: The system I am on right now has a processor with 462 pins, while many later processors (all the newest processors) have pin counts which differ from that. So those CPUs cannot be upgrades for mine, unless I also buy a motherboard that requires/supports the number of pins which the newest processors might have.

Yes, but the Core2Duos use a Socket T, also known as a LGA775, which matches the entry found by DaChew.

That being said, it is likely that the bios on this board will not support a Core2Duo.

In other words, the socket is the same, but the mobo will not understand how to drive the chip correctly.
