Mcat, first of all you do NOT sound like an idiot. Not knowing doesn't make you ignorant. All of us were new to computers at one time, and like you had to learn. And we are still learning as things change and evolve. Don't be afraid to ask questions, no one will laugh at you and think they are stupid questions.

As for uninstalling Norton, try it from safe mode.

Tutorial for how to get into safe mode.

Windows XP

Using the F8 Method

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.
And did you try to use the removal tool found

HERE
?

What error did you get when you tried? My concern is with Norton disabled, you have no protection against viruses. And no firewall if your Norton includes that.

For a replacement, see the post by Billy. He gives some good suggestions for antivirus and firewall if your Norton is the suite.

Just a suggestion, have you run an error check on your Hard Drive. Sometimes if there are errors on your Hard Drive, it can cause it to say that you Hard Drive is full, even though it isn't.

Hi mcat,

Glad to hear that you took that last ditch bit of advice that I had given you. I told you those two things would get rid of a lot of gunk and free up a lot of space. Did you get the ATF cleaner too? That sucker will scrub out a lot of junk every time you run it.

Billy O'Neal and Queen-Evie both gave you this link to help you get rid of Norton --> http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039 <-- get over there and follow all of their instructions or that sucker could still cause you problem later on.

Now get your butt over here --> http://www.avast.com/eng/download.html <-- and download that sucker so you'll have some good Anti-Virus protection. It's free but you will still have to register it every year. They'll send you an email with your KEY and instructions on how to do the registering thing.

For AdWare and Spyware you need things like spywareguard, it's free and you can get it here --> http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html <-- and SpywareBlaster goes with it, it's free too and you can get it here --> http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html.

SpyBot Search & Destroy is something else that you could check out, it's free too and you can get it here --> http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html <-- AdAware is good to have and it's free too, you can get it here --> http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Those are just a few that you can glom onto for free and all of those buggers work real good too. Just remember that AVAST! is the only one of those that is an Anti-Virus program. All of the rest are Anti Ad\Spyware thingies. You don't have to have all of them but keep in mind that they all do a different job.

SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, and TeaTimer, a part of SpyBot, all three just kind of hang out and keep a look out for nasty stuff and kill it before it can hurt you. The other things you have to run once in awhile for them to do any good.

Oh and don't forget that you need a REAL firewall. That imitation firewall thing that comes with windows leaves a lot to be desired. Check out COMODO PRO here --> http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ and it's free too. ZoneAlarm Free is another good firewall and you can get it here --> http://www.zonealarm.com/store/catalog/pro...sku_list_za.jsp <-- but make sure that you are getting the FREE one and NOT the Trial version of ZoneAlarm PRO. I had a BAD, BAD, BAD experience with them when I accepted a trial offer to their PRO version.

If you need any help with anything just ask and someone on here will be more than willing to give you a hand.

Wendy

Can too many large images in this file cause Internet Explorer connection problems?

C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Pictures

I transferred 500+ images from my cousin's digital camera to the above file on her PC.
The images are around 1800 X whatever the coordinate is. I would appreciate if someone
can let me know ASAP. My poor cousin hasn't been able to connect ever since and I feel
like it's all my fault.

Thanks

No, that folder should have no bearing on the internet connection.

If you, or her, want help resolving the connection, it would be best to start a new thread for it

Folks I don't want to step on any body. Your computer need space on the HD. and a lot more of Ram to run any of todays programs. When Ram is in mb instead of gigs lots of things don't work well if they work at all. Then put Nortons on top of it. Not going to get the job done.

I have also been there with Nortons. Start, search, files and folders. Type in Norton and run a search. Run it again and type in Symantec. If like it was in my case you will find lots of things under those names. Delete what you want. You can also look in more locations when using the Search, like hidden files and folders ect.

Hi Layback Bear,

Just an FYI, until somone made an unrelated post in this thread the other day, there had been no activity in this thread for a year and half. The person with the original problem who had Nortom probably long ago fixed their problem and moved on
