I posted this on another forum also (computerforums.org) but i think this website gets more traffic. Here is what i posted:

I have an old computer (laptop) that i would like to use as an external monitor for my new laptop. The older laptop i formatted and installed Ubuntu Linux on it (but i have another hard drive for it that has windows 98)
My new laptop is running Windows XP Home Edition.
Is there software (similar to maxivista) that will allow me to do this? I would prefer free software.
I've seen an open source application for one at http://sourceforge.net/. I'm sorry, but I don't recall the name, but it does exist

why won't my laptop work?

Thanks for letting me know that one actually exists, but to find it i will have to search a lot. The problem is when i search google (im searching sourceforge right now) it expects that I have two windows computers. It is probably very difficult to do it "cross-platform"
The program I was thinking of is called Synergy Not sure if that fits your needs or not

Thanks, I hadn't really heard of synergy until earlier yesterday. Aparently you can just move your cursor back and foruth and move clipboard items. I don't really need software to do this, as i am probably getting a 20' monitor soon.
