'Automatically restart' on the Startup and Recovery screen under Sytstem Properties on Control Pannel. I inserted the cd and it's not restarted yet (thank GOD?  )does anyone know how I can fix this  i need my cd drive BADLY fast replys pls EDIT: I just inserted CD and it worked first time. Afterwards i put in a different CD and the computer shut down anyway. HELP PLEASE?!?

Take a look in Event Viewer for errors...that might be related to your situation.
If it were me, I would concentrate on any error approximating the time of the changes...and any errors indicating any of the drives. My guess is that your drive is going bad...but that's not based on anything other than what you've stated. I worked on a system recently that would reboot anytime a cd was in the drive and being accessed.
Replacing the drive fixed the problem. |

All I can say is...it's not supposed to work that way.
Unless you can provide more illumination...I suggest removing that drive....inserting a temporary replacement...and seeing if the problem continues with that one. You only have to switch drives for 10 minutes or so, so the replacement drive can be borrowed from another working system. Louis |

Make sure any CDs you test with are clean and are not damaged.
Anything conspicuous in Device Manager? Assuming you are using XP, read this on how to check: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/s.../devicemgr.mspx Also, please reply back with Operating System and make/model of computer, when you can. I'm using 'The Sims' as my test CD and a Britney album ;) In Device Manager everything seems fine, no errors and CD looks fine (see image below). Many of those errors point to connectivity problems.
Have you not noticed such? The audit errors are caused whenever a boot is tried and is unsuccessful. I don't see anything pointing to any drive of any sort...which makes me suspect that we are drawing erroneous conclusions about what is happening to that system. Louis |

I noticed that opening and closing the CD tray was fine, but when a CD is inserted it trips my computer off completely or it trys to. I've tried various CDs and I tried a VERY new one that I've just bought and it let me play it (DVD) but every 30 mins it would try trip the computer off (could hear it from the back sparking). I put a CD in earlier adnd it stayed in, tried to trip then i opened the tray and closed it again and the computer tripped off completely. When this happens i hear a sparking sorta sound and I have to unplug the power cable out and in so that the machine will turn on again.

Sounds like an electrical problem of some sort to me.

If that's the case you definitely have an electrical problem either internally in the drive or somewhere inside the computer. I just realised that my drive D has messed up and is asking me to format it, this randomly happened and i will lose files if i format it ;[
i found http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk seems to work for people but I dont wanna kill my drive... Could this be linked to the CD Drive problem? |
