a battery failing might cause that if the computer bios was dated from january 31, 2008 but that's only a couple of weeks ago?
Are you sure about that date? there might be something really deep left in your system causing this? anyway the battery is the L in this picture http://cgi.ebay.ph/Gateway-Intel-Yorktown-...bayphotohosting This post has been edited by DaChew: Feb 16 2008, 10:02 PM -------------------- Chewy

Replacing the CMOS battery is an easy thing to do, and the battery is the cheapest part of your computer's innards. I know from experience that the thought of doing it yourself is intimidating, wondering if you're going to do something that will blow the computer up. All I can say is if I can do it, anyone can.
The links below will give you info on the process: How To Install A CMOS Battery http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000239.htm |

let's look at the hardware part of this first and see if I can explain how this might play out, if you clear cmos or remove the battery(same effect as a failing battery) then the bios loses it's programable settings including it's internal clock, it reverts to it's birthday and bios defaults
now one thing to investigate might be to look at bios and see if it's write protected, this is a switch that can be turned on or off in bios? when your computer boots bios hands the time off to windows(windows can't keep track of it when it's not loaded) but then windows can change the time in bios to be continued after I confirm, I just set my clock back to 2007 -------------------- Chewy

and when I looked in bios it was feb 16 2007
if you were to clear cmos or remove the battery and replace it back and then go directly into bios on booting it should show that the date is the born on date? After booting into windows if it changes to jan 31 then I would rule out the battery and try to find out why? -------------------- Chewy

I skimmed your thread, it was over my head, try my test
power down the computer, pull power cord, wait pull the cmos battery out, wait put it back in power cord back in, power up the computer, go directly into bios and note the time being a factory built computer it shouldn't have many if any special settings you need to adjust set the correct time while you are there but note what the time and date were before you change it save and boot into windows see if it changed anything -------------------- Chewy

QUOTE No luck i have spent the last few hours reinstalling again.. What exactly have you done? some details please? Several years ago(long ago and far away) my teenage son built his first computer, he kept tweaking the bios to try to enhance his gaming experience. His computer became unstable. He came to me and said he had a boot sector virus. I did a little reading up on the problem and found some old references to a virus actually making changes to the bios. I took his drive out of his machine and using a floppy wrote zeros to the drive, this wiped it clean, we flashed his bios to rewrite it, and then reloaded windows 98. A few weeks later he had it messed up again, I went into bios and set it back to defaults and it was fixed. This post has been edited by DaChew: Feb 17 2008, 07:42 AM -------------------- Chewy

A bad cmos battery will cause the system to lose time when powered off. They generally last about 4 or 5 years.
Its a CR2032 battery. Radio Shack has them for about 5 bucks. BUT if it is not losing time when off the battery is probably ok. I wonder if you have the system set to synch the time with an Internet time server? Go to date time properties. Look in the far right tab. I forget what it says right off. See if the checkbox to synch with a time server is checked. If so, uncheck it then set the date & time & see if it stays |
