Ok so my trusty hp just died due to cpu failure. I want to build my own now. I have a fairly tight budget. $500 or so. I know what I want and have a fairly good idea of what I need to due the build, but I have no idea on what motherboard or processor fits my needs or how to go about finding out. Anyways I just want a well balance pc; to run photo-shop cs3, listen to music and some song mixing, web browsing. I'm not a gamer. I like a snappy computer. One thing though I want a tower that i can see inside of with LED's. (I have a facination with lights). Don't know if thats important at this time or not. any help would be appreciated. I already have a monitor, printer/scanner, mouse/keyboard. I would also like to stay windows xp based if possible.

You can choose a case at Newegg.com there are sooo many to choose from it would be hard to decide for you. This is a typical AMD system for 450.00 Including Motherboard, CPU, Memory, HDD.
AMD Athlon 64X2 . The motherboard has on board graphics so you don't need a video card however in the future and when money allows you can upgrade to a PCI-E video card. You will still need a case and power supply.
Edit: forgot about a DVD R/RW drive
