I don't have much experience with laptop repairs, should I start off with a new power supply unit?

Laptop overheating is usually due to a faulty cooling fan or a dirty heatsink.
If the cooling fan is working, start by cleaning out the heatsink.
Ran across a thread were a person used the Satellite A60 manual to take apart his Equium A60.
It is here on 3 pages.

Turned out to be the fan which had packed up, but I had to put XP back on the machine - so I installed it from the freezer! New fan on the way!
Thanks for your help
